Island #7 – Review
Publisher: Image Comics
Island to state it frankly is more than just a comic. It’s a reminder of what the industry once was and what it appears to be headed towards again: a singular title where four or five creative teams work together collectively to bring you something unique all the while secretly competing to have the most creative and impactful story in the current months issue. It is the competitive formula where creativity and individuality thrive and the winner of the competition: Us the readers.
If you are a casual comic book fan maybe even a bit above average one could say that this comic is Americas answer to the very popular manga publication Shonen jump where you have new fresh artist bringing you five or six unique and individual stories within one issue.
The highlight story in Issue seven is Firebug part one the Chained Goddess. Created By Johnny Christmas with Tamara Bonvillain (colors) and Ariana Maher (letters). Set in the Azar The City of Fire this tale centers around a struggle between two spiritual factions: The spiritual Cult of The Goddess and the More rebellious Third Wave. Stuck in the middle is the mysterious and sexy Keegan who’s the key to every thing.
Long story short island is what I hope to be a new wave of comics a visual and literary showcase where hungry young talent fight to become the next big thing in an industry that desperately needs the next big thing. Island is not the type of comic you stuff in a crate with thousands of other comics island is the type of book that you sit on the coffee table on display for your friends to see to show how Smart and cool you really are.
