Motro #2 Review
Publisher: Oni Press
Writer: Ulises Farinas, Erick Freitas
Artist: Ulises Farinas
What do you get when fist of the North star and Mad Max’s baby has another baby with Adventure Time the answer is Motro. Set in a dystopian future where a man’s best friend are actually motorized vehicles used as pets; no seriously within the first 3 pages Motro the protagonist is feeding a cute little motorcycle doggie treats. It’s bits of cuteness like that makes the story truly a unique one. Motro this story’s main protagonist is your typical brooding loner with a tortured soul and can pack a mean ultra powered punch. He lives as a gravedigger for the united front army where he simply digs around the barren wasteland for treasures to bring back to the captain. One day Motro and a companion (who’s strangely left unnamed) happen upon a Crystal lens with magical properties so they figure why not bring it back for a big reward. Upon their return the captain is very pleased with their find and decides to hold a celebration where the lens will be put to use much to the chagrin of the captain’s son Rock Master. This issue ends with the main characters seeing what appears to be a tale of the future with very chilling implications for all involved.
Ulises Farinas art is whimsical but also very impactful making this title very approachable for all ages. At first glance it cam be written off as something akin to children’s book illustration but things get very real very fast when you see the detail in the tank that a masked goon is standing on in issue #1. Farinas definitely has some artistic chops!
The writing team of Farinas and Erick Freitas takes a lot of well-played calculated risks. In a medium where there is an undeniable lack of creativity these two pull off an amazing mix of childlike wonder and harsh grit that begs the reader to take notice.
I will admit that I was ready to write this story off as goofy and childish but upon giving this book a chance I quickly realized that this has the potential to be so much more. Motro has the capabilities to give adventure time a serious run for its money with its perfect blend of captivating story telling interesting characters and an art style that is not only very smooth but also very vivid and expressive making it good for readers of all ages. I’m going to make a bold prediction…..I can see this being picked up by Cartoon Network and being turned into the next big thing, remember where you first heard this. Motro is in its infancy now so RIGHT FRIGGIN NOW is when you should pick this up and be the cool kid your mom reassured you that you are.
