Earth’s Mightiest Recap – The Avengers #81-90
And there came a day unlike any other, when an internet blogger arms himself with a Marvel Unlimited account and Avengers soundtrack playlist on Spotify, on that day, this recap was born, to chronicle the entire series of the Avengers!
just finished Avengers #81-90 and I guess the best way to define these issues are crossovers. You aren’t a legitimate character unless you appear in both a FF and Avengers title.
Previously on Avengers (always wanted to say that lol) the team split up into 3 factions for 3 separate missions. Vision, Scarlet Witch and Goliath go to help Red Wolf take down Cornelius Van Lunt. When Vision is was tossing around bad guys Scarlet Witch was thinking Vision is pretty hot for a robot lol.
What they didn’t know was that Van Lunt was bankrolling the terrorist organization Zodiac, and with the Fantastic Four off planet they use this time to occupy Manhattan and hold it ransom for a billion dollars.
One of the hostages was blind lawyer Matt Murdock. The power suddenly went out of the building and no one could see anything. 3 guesses how that turns out lol. Daredevil recognized the heartbeat of his new BFF Black Panther who purposely cut the lights to give Matt the advantage, then they proceeded to rescue the Avengers captured after Zodiac gassed the mansion.
We also get the very first appearance of Valkyrie..kind of. She appears out of nowhere to recruits the female Avengers to form the Liberators. Turns out it was Enchantress in disguise the whole time in a scheme to use the battle of the sexes to break up the team. Oh yeah, Black Widow ditches that ugly ass Spider-Woman get up and now is the Emma Peel rip-off we all know and love.
It also has to be said that at this point Enchantress HATES Scarlet Witch. Not only because she’s insult by her mutant magic, every guys she goes after wants Wanda. First Hercules then Arkon. She even loses because she’s so focused on killing Scarlet Witch that she forgets the spell she put on Black Knight to make him fall in love with her.
After a team up on a parallel Earth with the Squadron Supreme (this time as good guys) Black Panther gets word that his mentor who he left on Wakanda has died, and is forced to quit the team to run his country.
While Cap and Falcon drag Thor, Iron Man, and Goliath to the Louisiana Bayou unexpectedly to fight waves of voodoo zombies to stop a comatose Hulk from being sacrificed to their Dark Gods (Wait…what?), the rest of the team members left behind on monitor duty get that call Captain Marvel has broken into the Baxter Building, but he’s only there to free Rick Jones from the Negative Zone after Rick freed him. Ronan the Accuser doesn’t like the fact that Mar-Vell is free from the Negative Zone and activates Kree Sentry 459 to kill when. When the Avengers put up a fight, Sentry 459 takes Mar-Vell and Ronan activates Plan Atavus.
After being briefed by Head of Security Carol Danvers, the team gets a radio message from Wasp. She and Hank Pym found a jungle island in the North Pole, but to make sure she didn’t follow, Hank backhanded her unconscious and tied her up to a flying insect to fly her away (I repeat…HE SMACKED HER ASS UNCONSCIOUS…). There the Avengers find Ronan, and he’s sick Sentry 459 getting his ass kicked by Earth’s heroes, and felt if left unchecked Earth could eventually rival the Kree. To stop that from happening, Ronan activates Plan Atavus to de-evolve Earth, starting with the North Pole. The issue ends with Hank Pym turned into a caveman about to kill Wasp.
So yeah…neglected domestic violence notwithstanding…it sucks that Black Panther left, but so with so many guest stars it’s easy to overlook it. Plus Thor and Iron Man seems to be regular characters and the stories are generally more entertaining when they’re in them. 10 more issues to 100 so let’s go.
