Sex Criminals #16 review
Publisher: Image comics
Writer: Matt Fraction
Artist: Chip Zdarsky
I’ve read quite a few comics over the years and there aren’t very many that can throw me for a loop these days. Sex criminals however has definitely succeeded in knocking the wind right out of me. It’s kinky enough to give you the raunch you’re looking for when you see this title at first glance, yet it’s underlying theme is intelligent enough to bring about heated lectures in university classrooms everywhere. Sex Criminals is a great departure from the deluge that is the typical superhero comic. Without giving too much away here Sex Criminals is about a young girl named Suzanne who in the wake of dealing with a family tragedy not only discoverers the orgasm, she also discovers that when she achieves an orgasm she can also freeze time. Even still she discovers that there are others who share her ability……. let the hijinx begin!
Chip Zdarsky’s artwork for Sex Criminals fits perfectly into the type of story this is. It’s slick, fun, and dynamic but also has a sense of realness to it that that gives weight to the characters. The sci-if elements are executed wonderfully! I enjoy the panels when Suzanne goes “into the quiet” the artist does a great job in illustrating the use of her powers. Even the antagonists “The Sex Police” are designed quite nicely even though they aren’t meant to be be taken seriously.
Even with the great artwork the engine that makes this story go is Matt Fraction’s ultra-creative writing. First off the very concept of being able to freeze time with your orgasm is pure gold, truly a much welcomed original idea where reboots are the order of the day. The cast of characters are diverse and engaging which is key in delivering an effective heist tale. The themes and concepts brought about from the Sci-fi aspect of Sex Criminals makes me buy in to the reality that is being presented in this title.
At the end of the day if you are like me you are looking for a break from the brightly colored underpants on the outside crowd the you won’t need to look far. Sex Criminals is a hip, and very cleverly written gem that you’d be thrilled you took a flyer on.
