Sex Criminals #17 – Review
Back with another installment of the freak-nasty Image drops the mic again with Super clever and super edgy Sex Criminals. In this issue the primary focus is on the main antagonist Kegelface aka Myrtle Spurge, why she’s taken up her cause, and just how dangerous she can be. Shit gets real in a hurry as line between good guys and bad guys get continuously blurred.
Once again the artwork for Sex Criminals is on the mark. Chip Zdarsky’s carefree yet technically sound style is flat out fun as hell to look at, and adds greatly to the storytelling. In this issue in particular the art seems to take a bit more of a lean towards the abstract and it doesn’t hurt things one bit. With his ability to change tones effortlessly Zdarsky is what is commonly referred to in baseball as a all-around player.
I am very much in love with this writing from this book. The narration alone is funnier than some of half of the mainstream characters in the comics right now. The characters are very likable, even the ones that are extreme douche bags. Each one has a story that’s begging to be told. What I love the most is how writer Matt Fraction seems to tow the line from sci-fi to crime noir to slapstick comedy all within a few pages of each other.
If I say it once I’ll say it again sex criminals is definitely worth your time. Just make sure that when you do grab your copy you wait till the kids are asleep. This book is A total joy ride from beginning to end. I personally plan on hitting up my local comic book store and getting all of the back issues of this title I find this book to be that entertaining.
