The Colonial Space Marines definitely deserve a raise and a cold beer after this job. After flying from one side of the galaxy to the other and going toe to toe with every hostile organism in space, things just don’t let up for these tough hombres. What was thought to be the light of hope at the end of the tunnel only turned out to be a big fiery explosion of FUBAR. Aliens, Predators and Engineers have put these marines through the grinder. As another battle royale wages between these deadliest of species, you still can’t count out the humans.
What has been one of the best epic comic book events in recent memory, the Life and Death crossover series is drawing near to an end. Beginning in Predator, Prometheus, Aliens, now Aliens Vs Predator #4 brings a close to this particular arc in explosive tragic fashion. The Space Marines make an uneasy alliance with a crew of Predators in order to face off an oncoming Alien horde. With ammo running out and the squad pinned down, scientist Chris, impregnated with an Alien Queen, is forced to make a difficult choice. This 16th chapter in a 17 part story brings everything closer to a thrilling climax that will wrap up in a one shot Prometheus book next month.
The art in this story continues to meld together with visceral power and movement. The gritty art style and panels serve the fast paced action making this book just a blast to read. The battle scenes are raw and detailed and full of bloody gory violence these films are known for. Fans of this universe would certainly find this book entertaining as the Life and Death series is so well written that it is worthy of a big screen adaption.
What started out as a search for new life has come full circle as the humans are faced with their own destiny and sacrifces have to be made to ensure their survival. Such is the way of life and death. As one ends, another begins. A fitting conclusion to this harrowing journey. These type of themes and ideas are what makes this comic such an intriguing story.
Overall AVP-Life and Death #4 is an explosive end to this epic story arc. It sets up the final chapter which is sure to be just as exciting as the previous entries. This crossover event has been an edge of your seat thrill ride that has been so satisfying, it’s amazing that its managed to maintain the momentum for almost a year. Complete with thrilling action and deep meaningful themes about life, sacrifice and reflections of death and destiny, this book brings the Aliens and Predator mythology to a whole new level. With all these deadly forces closing in on the survivors in the finale, it’s hard to know who will survive. As it turns out, screams can be heard in space.
