GENERATION ZERO #9 (Series Finale) Review
Written by Fred Van Lente
Drawn by Diego Bernard with Fred Benes
Issue number 9 wraps up what has been a solid run. Finally the secret behind the city of Rook is finally revealed. A final showdown between Keisha and Adelle Poole. I really think in Keisha, Valiant has found the next strong female character in a long line of strong female characters. She combines the the rebellious nature of Kris Hathaway with the wide eyed innocence of Faith Herbert.
Fred Van Lente delivers a satisfying conclusion to what has been a wild ride. Fred continues to show that he has a diverse voice. Growing the characters of Generation Zero and allowing them to mature organically. From Animalia now projecting more complex anime styled to the Zygos twins dependency on each other to survive. The best character is the incredibly creepy, Gamete, a psiot activated fetus… shiver!
Diego Bernard and Fred Benes do a fantastic job conveying the action and in an instant switch to an emotional moment. Many artist miss the subtle facial expressions that convey emotion, but Diego really captures Addeles unhinged emotions as she continues to spiral out of control throughout the issue.
Normally when i series comes to a close like this it feels like the ending was rushed. However this issue wraps everything up with a satisfying conclusion. And it expertly sets up Generation Zero for the future so that we can come back and visit them anytime. Generation Zero has been a fan favorite since there introduction in Harbinger Wars through Armour Hunters and I hope we get to see more from them real soon. And anytime we get a chance to see Fred Van Lente play in the Valiant universe you just know you are going to have a great time.
