Secret Empire #2: Marvel brings more of The Defenders and Doctor Strange
Writer – Nick Spencer
Art – Andrea Sorrentino and Rod Reis
Publisher – Marvel
Marvel and Nick Spencer’s controversial event continues with a brilliant issue.
Nick Spencer does an impressive at engaging the reader in a thought provoking way. The story is well paced setting up events to come and executing plots brilliantly.
Nick does some interesting character development in this issue and does it too three characters. These characters are Kingpin, Captain America and Black Widow. Kingpin is a surprising character to develop out of the Dark force New York cast. This issue does a good job at explaining what’s happening but the way the kingpin controls the scene is breath taking. Nick puts the fear into the Kingpins actions.
Nick works in some Cap development in a stylish way that gives you sympathy for Cap and you question is Cap a bad guy. This is brilliant work by Nick Spencer.
Black Widow is the character Nick spends the most time developing. The way she interacts with characters and surroundings gives Natasha relatability to the reader as Nick has made her the voice of the reader. Spencer does a great job at exploring Natasha’s motives and emotions in a believable fashion.
The story itself is beautifully written as it delivers an entertaining read that engages with the reader.
Andrea Sorrentino’s art is great. His art style works beautifully at setting up the tone and give a sense of hopelessness Nick’s writing creates with the minimalistic detail and heavy use of black. The style change towards the end of the book with Rod’s art was at first disorientating. However, the art is fantastic and captures the atmosphere of the last few pages.
There is an amazing double page spread that is so magnificent it takes my breath away. This is my favourite page of the issue.
The colors for Rod’s pages are beautiful as they convey the perfect tone and atmosphere. The colors for the main portion of the issue are hit and miss as the backgrounds and color changed panels are stunning as they bring life to the page. However, some of the panels feel like they would of worked better with selective color like when the Black Widow welcomes some heroes to the new red room.
I really wanted more of that style of coloring.
This is a brilliant second issue to an engaging event. Nick Spencer is a fantastic writer and the art by Andrea and Rod is superb. This is a series to read.
