Wynonna Earp: Season Zero #1 Review
Story – Beau Smith & Tim Rozon
Writer – Beau Smith
Art – Angel Hernandez
Colors – Jay Fotos
Publisher – IDW Publishing
What happens when Wynonna’s past comes back to haunt her? Beau Smith and Tim Rozon are set to explore that in Season Zero issue 1
Beau and Tim have taken the biggest underlining theme of Wynonna Earp and used it as the basis for Season Zero. That theme is family and Beau & Tim utilize it perfectly here.
Season Zero has a lot more heart compared to other volumes of Wynonna Earp. This allows it to stand on its own yet it remains recognizably still a Wynonna book. This is a great read for anyone wanting to know what makes these characters special. That is because this issue delves deep into their personalities.
Beau has never had an issue with the pacing of his Wynonna books, this is no different. The steady pace of the story created by the natural flow of the dialogue is the perfect combination. He knows how to balance hard hitting emotion and humour with his dialogue. Doc Holiday’s love for dynamite is one of them.
The story overall is beautifully executed as the pacing is brilliant and the dialogue delivers when it needs to.
Angel Hernandez’ art is beautiful. The character likeness is perfect for every character, because of that you are immersed into the issue. Angel uses the angle of the camera perfectly to amplify the emotional impact of the panel or page. The facial and posing work within these panels to express the emotional importance of the scene is perfect.
Jay Fotos provides the colors and does a wonderful job. His colors complement the art and add to the tone and context of a scene. Fotos colors are at their best during the flashback scenes as the tones of grey are subtle and beautifully blended.
This is a great read with some fantastic art. Wynonna Earp fans old & new will love this. This is another great step into comics from Wynonna Earp Legends: Doc Holiday writer himself Tim Rozon. I look forward to the rest of this series and any other projects Tim does in the future.
