Skin & Earth #2 Brings the Philosophy
Writer – Lights
Art – Lights
Publisher – Dynamite Entertainment
This issue only has two characters interacting and for them to work, there needs to be chemistry. Lights writes the chemistry perfectly in this issue as their motivations, personality and dialogue bounces off them enriching the story.
Issue two hints at the journey this series will take however, in order to enjoy this journey, we must understand the characters. The main plot of this issue is just that, as Lights details what En thinks and feels about the world she lives in. This makes most of the first half of the issue and can feel just like exposition. However, this actually progresses the issue along and develops En further.
What Lights writes about can be applied in the real world and that’s what gives this issue is roots. Issue 2 has a lot of heart because of this, which she uses to give the reader an emotional investment in these characters. The overall pacing of this issue is very well done. The way this issue progresses it could have gone very wrong. However, Lights’ snappy dialogue keeps the narrative moving even if the characters are not.
Art also by Lights works well for the story she is telling. She has her own style which gives these characters their personalities. The line work is expressive which adds impact to the character’s gestures and movements. The second half of issue 2 is told through emotions that Lights gets perfectly. The art tells the story in the second half of this issue just perfectly that the dialogue just adds context to the story unfolding.
Lights uses hues from background light when she is coloring to create an atmosphere. This is seen more in the second half of the issue. As a result, these hues also express the emotion taking place in these scenes which was an excellent use of color. The rest of the color is beautiful with a show of depth with the shading.
Issue 2 is a beautifully drawn and written issue that has philosophy that can be used in everyday life. Lights also doesn’t include this ideology of thinking to sound pretentious and superior but to develop a character and explore their thinking. The story is shaping up well and I can’t wait for new music & issue 3.
