The Steel City Files #002- SeanRod’s First Game Back A Classic
A lot of strange stuff happened last night in the world of Pittsburgh sports. But before we dive deep into that, let’s cover the event that has Pirates fans talking…
Well it looks like bringing utility fielder Sean Rodriguez back to the Steel City was a smart move. Yesterday, in his first game returning as a Pirate, SeanRod smashed a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 12th to defeat the Padres 5-4. After the game winning dinger, Rodriguez was showered with the club gatorade bucket by his teammates.
“ I love it here in Pittsburgh,” SeanRod told reporters. Rodriguez had a rough go while in Atlanta. During the off season, he was involved in a car crash that required the game winner to undergo shoulder surgery. Having a batting average of less than .200 and only 2 homers weren’t the numbers the Braves were hoping for. But it seems that recovering from injury wasn’t the shot in the arm Rodriguez needed- he was just homesick for the Burg!
At yesterday’s Family Fest, the Steelers unveiled their new color rush-style jerseys with tongue firmly in cheek. The all-gold cut-offs were a fan favorite. But the moment of the night was a bit of a switch-a-roo. The ageless wonder, James Harrison, came out of the locker rooms sporting #7 on his back. Meanwhile Big Ben exited wearing a bright gold #92! It turns out the two decided to imitate each other’s signature entrances to much fanfare and laughs.
Now, just how do we get our hands on those sweet jerseys?
Speaking of cool looking stuff, have you seen the Art Rooney tribute helmets that the Pitt Panthers came up with? In honor of the recent passing of the Steelers owner, the football team created a special helmet to wear during their spring football game. The gold helmet on one side bears the distinctive PITT logo and the other side is the Steelers logo.
When it was debuted back in May, fans went nuts over these. And right they should. They look freakin’ sweet! Well, rumor has it that due to fan demand, Pitt is going to release a batch just in time for the holidays. Should this come to pass, I’ll keep you posted on when and where you can find these beauties.
Weird Sports of the River City
As I mentioned in my last Steel City Files, I will be covering a range of other sports that occur in Pittsburgh. One of those is roller derby. The season might be over for the two, yes 2 Pittsburgh roller derby teams: the Steel Beamers and Steel Hurtin’. But the fun doesn’t have to end for fans. On August 18-20, the city’s roller derby club will be hosting the 2017 International WFTDA D2 Playoffs and Championships.
The 3-day event will be held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. Tickets are still available.
Any fans of Ultimate Frisbee Football out there? Okay, did anybody know that there was an Ultimate Frisbee Football League? I didn’t either. But there is and Pittsburgh has a team. Last night, the Pittsburgh Thunderbirds beat the Minnesota Wind Chill 26-25 in a come from behind victory. This advances the Thunderbirds to the 2nd round of the AUDL (American Ultimate Disc League) playoffs. The team plays again August 12th in Madison, WI for the Midwest Championship against the Radicals.
Well, that’s a look at Steel City sports for today. Until next time no matter what team you root for- Go Pittsburgh!
