If the comic book character, Tarzan, could have looked the way Sheena does, I would have been a fan for life. From the creative mind of Marguerite Bennett, who brought you DC’s comic series, Bombshell and Joker’s Daughter #1, comes Sheena: Queen of the jungle. What was once an undiscovered village, deep in the jungle, has been invaded by a group of mercenaries from Cadwell Industries. Demanding for the return of their comrade, Sheena is forced to search for him or else the village she loves and everyone in it will suffer. This is my review of Sheena: Queen of the Jungle issue # 1.
As the village is set in an undisclosed country, the villagers live simple almost prehistoric lives. Though Sheena seems to be a member of the tribe, her looks and appearance is as different as night and day. Blond-haired and jade-colored eyes, she is a protector and Queen over her domain. Though little is known about why a group of mercenaries are there, one thing is clear, if a member is not found in three days, someone is going to pay dearly. The classic ultimatum.
Love the scenery done in the comic series. Sheena is drawn like a strong warrior woman, much like Princess Diana but set an uncharted jungle. With many of animals, living in the jungle, sets the tone of world where the unknown can eat you alive. Wondrous colors make the backdrops offer an Aztec realm that moves the story forward.
I find Marguerite Bennett fascinating to read. The stuff she imagines must keep her awake all night. One question I would pose to her about her character Sheena is was she created from an inner-secret personality or someone she admires? There’s a few things in the storyline about why are there mercenaries invading this innocent tribe? What does this simple village have that is so precious that Cadwell Industries wants so desperately. All this on next issue # 2 due out October 4th. The issue # 1 is currently available.
