Riftworld Legends #4

What’s done in the dark will eventually come to the light. That might not bode well for our heroes. Fiona’s Confirmation grows nearer, and her grandmother has come across Fiona’s secrets that could end her life. Jackie and Shim are prepared to spend weeks on the island if they have to. However, no amount of firewood can protect them from the shadows of the forest. The surprises never end for the captured Thora. What could possibly be the endgame?
Boy, does Jonathan Williams keep things stirred up. Every time I turn the page I expect to find some clue that’ll eventually tie all these adventures together. Unfortunately for my impatience, I haven’t seen any. Have I ever told you that this book is unpredictable. Well, it certainly is and the Riftworld team seems fit to keep it that way. I feel like I’m reading a “Choose Your Own Adventure” game here. One can certainly tell the reader is going to have to keep rolling that dice. Keep playing those cards.
I strongly believe that this is what keeps Riftworld interesting. Now, going back to Grandma and Fiona, I wish their parts of the story were a bit longer. Not just so we can keep hearing about Shim and Jackie. I love that, believe me. However, I’d like to see more background like the Regency rising to power or tensions within the village. Perhaps more of the family life. While Riftworld does a good job of keeping us up to date on the island, I’d still like to see more of each world. With the end of Grandma’s story in this issue, we may see some of that soon.
We’ve seen Daniel Wong’s art on humans and monsters, but its time to combine the two. Yes, I mean your more fantastical and humanoid creatures. If Wong can handle undead skeletons, he can handle what’s coming next. I expect to see more creature/character building in the next issue.
Last but not least, the amount of cliffhangers is killing me, but it keeps Riftworld from a boring plot. How will Jackie and Shim escape? What is the Captain playing at? Where is Thora and why is she there? Guess you’ll have to tune in next time for Riftworld #5.
