It all ends here – Skin & Earth #6 review
Art – Lights
Writer – Lights
Publisher – Dynamite Entertainment
This is it, the end to Lights Epic Skin & Earth is here. En uncovers the truth about Tsu and the revelations leave En’s life changed forever.
Skin & Earth was a fantastic concept, that continued to amaze with each issue. Issue 6 however, is Lights best issue and fantastic conclusion. Lights, concludes Skin & Earth with a double sized issue, which is filled with revelation after revelation. The revelations however, don’t affect the pacing of the narrative.
The pacing here is fantastic, Lights moves the narrative with ease, jumping from the past to present seamlessly. The stakes raised are truly felt, which creates perfect tension between En & Tsu. There is also, a great atmosphere throughout this issue, that adapts well to the tonal changes.
The writing on the characters is fantastic. Lights fully develops En, Tsu & Priest throughout the series however, here their development is most noticeable. En journey in issue 6 is a fantastic thing the see, the decisions and emotions she feels, connect to the reader. The characterisation engages readers investment.
Lights does include a lot of exposition, to explain characters motives & backstories. However, Lights does this in an organic way engrossing you rather than bogging you down. The overall, story is fantastically emotional, with great call-backs to previous issues and the Skin & Earth mythos.
The art in Skin & Earth has been fantastic, issue 6 the art is amazing. Lights has outdone herself with a nice variety of panel layouts and beautifully drawn pages. The character designs are wonderful. Character expressions & emotions are excellently captured in every panel. The backdrops and establishing shots have great detail and awe-inspiring to look at.
Colors provide some great depth and form. There are also, some great color blends, used in the sky and backgrounds. Overall, the colors bring Skin & Earth & issue 6 to life.
Skin & Earth issue 6 is a fantastic read & one of my personal favorite comics of 2017. Lights has truly produced one of the greatest music/comic crossovers. The story is gripping, with fantastic characters and amazing art. The ending is ambiguous but satisfying, with room to continue En’s journey. Lights has shown she is a talented comic creator & I’d love to see her do more in the comics world. The issue ends with a Q&A which is informative and the best way to end such a fantastic series.
