An interview with Grimwood Crossing creator Conner Bartel
Independent comic creators are on the rise and Kickstarter is where you can find brilliant creators and projects to back. I had to pleasure of being introduced to Conner Bartel and his project Grimwood Crossing. We had a chat to talk about his current Kickstarter campaign and the creation process.
TG: Hi Conner…So, first thing first. I’ve seen your Kickstarter for your project ‘’Grimwood Crossing Vol. 1 & 2” What the best description of what the story is about?
CB: Grimwood Crossing is a supernatural western. In the grim old west, vampires, werewolves, and zombies are a part of the everyday struggle for a frontiersman. The local sheriff and his young deputy must protect the town from monsters while maintaining law and order. This has never been more challenging now that an outlaw with demonic powers has set his sights on Grimwood.
TG: What inspired you to create the title?
CB: I’ve always been a fan of monster Hunter stories. And enjoyed a good western. Combining them seemed like the perfect story for me to write. If you want to write a story, make it a story you’d want to read.
TG: What would you say, separates your comic from the rest?
CB: Grimwood Crossing is stylish and action packed but I think the amount of emotion in the story will surprise people. Relationships between main characters and side characters are centre stage. Loss, jealousy and the feeling of being replaced are all main themes in this story.
TG: Do you have a creative background?
CB: This is my first project to be released. My parents were always encouring when it came to anything creative. I always knew I wanted to create stories, I just didn’t know that I wanted to create comics until high school was coming to an end.
TG: What excites you most about the creative process?
CB: The collaborative process is what excites me the most. I love having a visual representation of how Atagun envisioned the script. When two people trust each other creatively, they can combine their visions to make something better.
TG: In your Kickstarter that is currently going on – What are you most excited to offer backers?
CB: I’m really excited about the special editions. They are jam-packed with all kinds of extra content that I can’t wait to get out to people. Extra stories, concept art, and behind the scenes content are just some of stuff in the special edition.
TG: How did you and Atagun Ilhan meet and come up with the idea of doing a supernatural western together?
CB: After I wrote the script for Grimwood, I searched reddit and deviant art for an artist. Atagun was my number 1 choice but I didn’t think I could get him to agree to this big project. His style was perfect and didn’t need color to get the best effect. When Atagun combined his artistic vision with my story, we got a new thing all together.
TG: Do you have any plans to produce any other comics in the future?
CB: Hopefully GwC is the start of a long and prolific comic writing career! My next project will be much smaller but has yet to be announced.
TG: Do you have a mailing list or Facebook page for those who would like to follow the story or the creative process of Grimwood Crossing even once the campaign is over?
TG: Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to create their own comic/graphic novel?
CB: My advice is to settle down! No one is going to make their magnum opus on their first try yet a lot of people try. Start small with an amateur artist and build up your body of work.
TG: Well, I guess that’s it…one final thing… Do you have anything to say to potential backers reading this that are on the fence still?
CB: Most of our backers so far are returning from the volume one campaign. People are loving it and you will too! Only $5 for the volume 1 pdf if you’d like to give it a try
