“Hillman Meets Hogwarts” and So Much More in SORCERORITY
The First Historically Black Coven and University is About to be Shaken to it’s Core!
Created by George Watson and Mikhail Sebastian
Art: Mikhail Sebastian
When I saw the website describe this book as Hillman meets Hogwarts, I expected a fun yet emotional story. Not saying that this book couldn’t go that rout. However, I was smacked in the face by the end of this book. Excursia, an magical institute that taught great leaders Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Harriet Tubman, opens its doors to the public for the first time. Meanwhile, a young girl named Melanie is determined to grow her powers. A night of tragedy marks the end of Melanie’s childhood and the beginning of a new powerful life.
George Watson and Mikhail Sebastian have released an amazing preview issue of Sorcerority. Despite the headline for this article, Watson and Sebastian have given Sorcerority its own place in magical literature. For a preview issue, everything is ell laid out as if Watson and Sebastian don’t want readers to be bagged down by information in issue one. I certainly appreciate that. Sure, some background info is useful in later issues. However, the building blocks have been set.
Mikhail Sebastian’s art seems to have its ups and downs. Personally its a common thing I see when artists create a blend of anime and Western comic style. Sometimes it can be a bit rigid and stiff. However, most of these panels are amazing. You’ll see in the preview down below. I had to keep flipping back the pages just to see the awesome design and details Sebastian put into his work. Also from the previews below, Sebastian sticks to a limited palette. It helps make those few splashes of brighter colors pop every now and then. If you’ve read my review of Nicola Scott and Greg Rucka’s Black Magic, then you know how much I love that.
As you can see from the cover, there’s plenty of colors waiting for us on the next issue. If you can wait a few weeks, then I’m sure it’ll be worth it. Visit the Noir Caesar website if you want to check out this free preview issue.
