RiffTrax Live Prepares for a Space Mutiny
MST3K alums Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett are preparing for a Space Mutiny. On June 14, the trio will be hosting a live simulcast of their comedic take on the 1988 South African sci-fi film in another edition of Rifftax Live.
Nelson founded an online database called Rifftrax in 2006. Nelson would provide fans parody-style commentary, for a small fee, that could be watched in coordination with popular movies such as the Star Wars prequels. A couple of months later, the former Mystery Science Theater 3,000 host recruited pals Murphy and Corbett to expand the Rifftrax line.
Rifftrax begin a series of live shows in 2007 beginning with Ben Affleck’s Daredevil. However, those shows were considered highly costly, and only performed at certain events such as San Diego Comic-Con. In 2013, Nelson begin using crowdfunding to help put on the live shows. Through Kickstarter, Rifftrax has skewered films such as Night of the Living Dead, Starship Troopers and most recently, a classic episode of Doctor Who.
This year’s crowdfunded live shows will feature 1983’s sword and sci-fi crossover Krull as well as Space Mutiny.
Space Mutiny, also known as Mutiny in Space was infamously known for having directly stolen several scenes involving spaceships from the short-live 1970s version of Battlestar Galactica. The film was subject of a 1997 episode of MST3K that is considered a fan favorite. Space Mutiny stars TV’s Captain America, Reb Brown, John Phillip Law (Barbarella) and Billy Jack‘s Cisse Cameron.
The live showing of Rifftrax’s Space Mutiny will take place nationwide on Thursday, June 14th at 7pm EST. The event will be broadcast live from the Belcourt Theater in Nashville, TN. A special encore showing will occur on Tuesday, June 19th. As with all Rifftrax features, the guys will also be riffing on a short educational film as an appetizer.
