I don’t know what I was expecting when I cracked this book open. May mixed feelings. I will start off by saying that if you don’t follow the Jem comics, then you should. Its a Holiday party/ office function for the Holograms and the Misfits. You know what that means? Secret Santa. In an attempt to bring them closer together, a rigged Secret Santa was played. The outcome being that The Holograms and the Misfits got each other’s name. Jem to Pizzazz, Aja to Jetta, Shana to Stormer, etc. Though Pizzazz is Jewish, she played along, too.
Thankfully, its not so bad. With all that’s been happening between the two groups, Jerrica decides that its time for them to be the bigger band and get it over with. Surprised to see that each member ended up with a gift they enjoyed. Even Kimber gave Synergy a Christmas tree hat. Who doesn’t want to see the all powerful Synergy wearing a goofy hat? In the middle of opening gifts, Pizzazz comes by to give Jem a gift. Its in a black bag full of emergency items, including earplugs, flashlights, Swiss army knife, and other useful items. Very nice gesture on her part, though Aja isn’t buying it. Also, Shana tried dating. Didn’t end too well.
If you want to see more of Amy Mebberson;d fine work, check out Pocket Princesses (Mebberson’s own comic strips about various Disney princesses living together). In some parts of the book, the art was great. In other places, not so much. For starters, drunk/buzzed(?) Shana was a fun sight to see. She even ended up flirting. Aja’s eyes are a bit more slanted than usual (not at all a problem). However, her weith did seem to fluctuate. Some moments she looked thinner than in others. The characters did seem to have that trademark Mebberson-cute look, which fit their personalities. The Garbowska cover is very appealing. Has that sort of Grinch feeling to it that suggest something totally different from the real outcome. The Amy Mebberson variant is the opposite: full of holiday spirit. What I couldn’t quite get over was Aja’s attitude. Sometimes its just Aja, other times its a bit harsh. “It’s the disinterest. Draws them like flies to honey”. Perhaps one could respect that. Warning: Pizzazz’s speech bubbles are dashed lines and my be hard for some people to see.
