Geek Picks for June 29th, 2016
New Comics Wednesday is upon us again, and some of us here at Outright Geekery are running down the top pick on our comic stacks for this week. It’s Geek Picks for June 29th, 2016! What are you looking forward to reading this week?
Taylor: Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #9
The 5th Wednesday of the month is always slow, but I’ll get to end the month on a laugh thanks to Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #9. As we enter the 2nd phase of Doreen’s date with super hero truther Hawkjock, I’m expecting more good times from the funniest series Marvel’s putting out these days
Publisher: Marvel Comics
(W) Ryan North (A/CA) Erica Henderson
• The comic that got TWO #1s in its first year now reaches a new milestone: its very first #9!
• In Part 2 of “I Kissed A Squirrel And I Liked It,” Squirrel Girl’s date with a chump gets interrupted by MOLE MAN, who is a man who lives underground and can’t see that well! Hence the name!!
• Squirrel Girl is really good at empathizing with bad guys and talking them down, but what happens when she’s TOO good at that?
• Buy this comic to find out, because we show exactly that taking place! Spoiler alert: there’s punches AND jokes.
• Not a dream! Not an imaginary story! ONE the following three things WILL ACTUALLY OCCUR in this issue! 1) A pleasant visit to a coffee shop with friends; 2) A man with fishy powers suggests using fish to solve a problem, big surprise; 3) SQUIRREL GIRL USES HER TAIL TO KNOCK THE SMIRK RIGHT OFF A DUDE’S FACE!!
• Haha whoa I hope it’s the third one

David: 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank #2
After a bit of a hiatus, could Black Mask Comics be making a comeback? 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank (4KWB for short) shows that Black Mask can still publishing great new original series. Writer Matthew Rosenberg’s previous work for Black Mask was We Can Never Go Home, and that was an absolutely great series (and can find copies of WCNGH, you should check it out). 4KWB is Rosenberg’s follow-up, this series an awesome blend of a bank heist and teen angst with some Dungeon and Dragons tossed in for good measure. I’m so stoked to pick up this on Wednesday.

Gaumer: Mirconauts #3
I was so excited for this titles when it was announced, but it’s had a hard time living up to the hype I attached to it. With that said, though, I really want it to be good. But everyone has their breaking point; mine just happens to be 3 issues. Please be good, Micronauts #3. I so want you to be good!

The universe is being torn apart and the MICRONAUTS are caught in the middle! They find themselves prisoners… er, guests… of the enigmatic FORCE COMMANDER, leader of the SPACE GLIDERS, who has a connection to Captain Oziron Rael-one that makes Rael a target for BARON KARZA and his ACROYEARS

Josh: Bloodshot Reborn #14
This was hard for me. It’s definitely a Valiant week, with the last storyline for X-O Manowar starting in this weeks issue 47. I got to give it to Bloodshot Reborn 14, though. Jeff Lemire is doing his best work on this book and artist Mico Suayan has been dropping images from this story on his FB page for months. It truly looks epic.
