In “Who Killed Superwoman Part 2: What Comes Next?” Lois Lane has been killed…As in Superwoman…As in the star of the comic you’re reading. Lana Lang, who is the other Superwoman, barely escapes with her life against not one but two Bizarro Superwomen, one of which seems to be Mercy Graves. Now the plot thickens as Lexcorp in general is under attack, and since Lexcorp makes up half of the business in Metropolis, that means half of Metropolis is under attack. Which leaves it up to Lana Lang and her new boyfriend Steel to find out who’s targeting Lexcorp. Where did the Bizzaro Superwomen come from? Is Lois really dead? Also, with Lana’s failing health, is she far behind?
Okay, I’m liking this book WAY more than I have a right to. It’s giving me everything I want right now from a Superman book. The return of “Electric Boogaloo” Superman? Check. Steel? Check. Maggie Sawyer? Check? Even Lex Luthor as replacement Superman? Discount Double Check. The book feels like the continuation of New 52 Superman, even more so than the current Superman books. They’re taking some very ballsy choices, and I have to commend them for it. Plus I’ve always been a closeted Steel fan (we had to go into hiding after the Shaq movie) so it’s good to see him as the veteran superhero among amateurs, instead of the way around. I’m even interested to see what direction they take with the Big Bad, giving SuperLex his first arch enemy.
As much as I’m enjoying the book, I’m kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop. Somehow DC is going to screw up this momentum. Either the events of this book won’t be acknowledged in the DCU, or they’ll bring Lois back which will make this entire story pointless. Or maybe the book will keep delivering and they’ll just cancel the book altogether, right after they resurrect New 52 Superman.
As long as they keep the momentum with this series then I’m bought in. Lex Luthor seems to have a bigger role in this series then in the main Superman titles, which I felt sidelined him in favor of the new Superboy. If Steel is a major character in this book then you have my money. All I ask is that you follow through with what I consider one of the most shocking plot twist in recent comics, and not undo everything we’ve just read. We’ve seen that happen too many times in other books, and bring back dead characters is always the fastest way to kill a series.
