I started watching Superman as a young child, maybe 5 or 6 years of age. And it sparked within me a lifelong love of superheroes, and all things geek. Christopher Reeve was and always will remain my Superman of choice. Reeve was the one that remains to this day engraved on my memory as the best. This of course is a personal opinion, but I believe many among us kind of stick with the person who introduced them to something the longest. I am not against the other impersonations of the character, but as they say your first true love remains a lifetime…
Also, I was fascinated by him, by his powers and most of all his ability to fly. I wished so hard and so long that I could too. But alas it was not meant to be. Of course let us not talk about the crush I had on him and the envy I felt towards Lois!
There is in the first movie a scene on a boat if I remember correctly with a few men sat at a table, one is a red haired man. Oz Clarke whom I have met. He has become a world renowned sommelier since then. However, it is quite fantastic to have met someone who was part of it all really.
Of course years later, I along with the word was devastated at the early death of Christopher. No one had seen the accident coming. Such a sad ending for one of the largest heroes of the world. His loss will never be forgotten nor his legacy. I believe he singlehandedly brought hope to a legion of people like me, who felt a bit lost, bullied at times for who we were but who were able to look inside themselves and find great strength.
I feel Christopher is and will remain the Superman of choice among many of us. And I like many cannot help but sigh at times when I hear of a new Superman coming along, thinking “Why do they even bother? We already have had the best there ever will be!”
So thank you Christopher, for unbeknownst to you having shaped my life in a way you’d never know. Thank you Superman.
