Wonder Woman is DCEU’s lowest grossing opening weekend at the box office.
For the June 2-4 box office weekend, Wonder Woman was the #1 movie in the world. With also a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes (93%), one could argue this is the first “win” for the DCEU. While there are several reasons to celebrate, as to being ALREADY the highest grossing comic book movie starring a female lead, as well as the highest grossing movie by a female director after only one week, looking closer at the box office returns may tell a different story.
Here are the opening weekend domestic gross of the DCEU films according to Boxofficemojo.com:
Man of Steel: $116,619,362
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice: $166,007,347
Suicide Squad: $133,682,248
Wonder Woman: 103,251,471
How is this possible? How can Wonder Woman receive the highest critical praise of any DCEU movies before it yet have the lowest opening weekend? Could it be diminishing returns of too many comic book movies? Could it be a “fool me once” scenario with audiences that haven’t been too pleased with DC’s former live action showings? Could it be lack of an aggressive ad campaign that Warner Brothers was accused of before the film’s release? Could it be the fact that a female superheroes don’t garner as much attention as their male counterparts?
While the fans rejoice, what about Warner Bros studio execs? Do they see these numbers as a cause for concern or a win like so many other fans? The true test may lie in the second week box office returns. Previous DCEU movies suffered record breaking second week dropouts, so it will be interesting to see if word of mouth can help Wonder Woman maintain a strong box office performance.
