TotL – 5 Could-See Movies in August 2017
On this week’s Top o’ the Lot, or TotL (pronounced “Total” by the kids) we’re looking into the future…well, not that far into the future, but into the future nonetheless. 2017 is a banner one at the box office. So many good movies have already dropped with so many more great flicks on the way. August 2017, however, is NOT one of those months. Back to school, summer simmer down, and just a bit of seasonal fatigue (translated to: We’re all freaking broke!) make August a, for lack of a better word, poopy month for movies, especially when compared to the rest of the year’s stock. But we were still able to find a few good reasons to see a few good movies dropping this month. So, without further ado, a re-release rules, a sequel that rocks, and lots of original films, in Outright Geekery’s Top o’ the Lot: 5 Could-See Movies in August 2017.

Honorable Mention: Terminator 2 3D – August 25th
Not a new movie, but a new twist on an old classic deserves at least a mention in this month full of mediocre. T2 is a triumph of movie making, and is arguably the greatest science fiction action film of all time. I probably wouldn’t make that argument, but the 3D re-release of this classic is a shining light in an otherwise dark month of movies.
5. Logan Lucky – August 18th
Two dumb brother, one hell of a plan, and a NasCar Race, combined with an all-star cast and a brilliant director is enough to make this movie a huge box office draw, but it still should be a fun time at the theater. While I’m not saying Logan Lucky will be too smart for many comedy seeking movie-goers, number 4 on this Lot may be more on the level of the average ticket buyer.
4. The Hitman’s Bodyguard – August 18th
A more traditional style action/comedy, wrapped around a buddy-comedy, starring two very well-known action/comedy actors is bound to be a big draw. Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson are going to put asses in the seats, and it will likely be worth your 20 bucks and two hours to check this out.
3. Kidnap – August 4th
A wise man has convinced me to never underestimate the power of a movie like Kidnap. Sure, it’s up against the biggest movie of the month on its opening weekend, but I have a lot of faith in Halle Berry as a lead, and the audience to care just enough to give this movie a stronger second week, especially if The Dark Tower takes a turn. This has the perfect formula for a surprise hit.
2. The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature – August 11th
Yes, I know the first Nut Job movie only made an abysmal $64 million in the U.S. when it was released in 2014, but millions of DVD sales later, this movie is going to be another big animated hit for 2017, and it will likely be fantastic. The first Nut Job was a great animated movie, and 2017 has a trend of animated movies having some staying power.
1. The Dark Tower – August 4th
It’s PG-13? It’s only 90 minutes? Still The Stephen King adaptation has big time name recognition and two stars that are undeniably stars. I think this will be a big draw on its first week, but, again, not a blockbuster despite it being in the Top spot o’ this Lot.
