For those who do not know:
When their father is murdered by their friend Sam, Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode Locke are forced to movie with their mother to the family estate of Keyhouse, which is in Lovecraft, Massachusetts. Sam survives and while in juvenile detention, speaks with a spirit that can free him if he helps it with Keyhouse. From there, it’s various encounters and adventures with the various mysterious keys and the bizarre things they do.
This latest hardcover of Locke And Key collects the following stories: Open The Moon, Grindhouse and In The Can. These stories came out a few years ago but but were from the one-shots that had not been collected yet. These stories do add a lot the the experience of Locke And Key, even if they are somewhat considered side tales.
It’s hard to review this because I feel like L&K is up there with the best comics you can read and it really helped get Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez noticed.
The section called “The Real Lovecraft, Mass” is great because it’s just pics of the creative team hanging in the North East but from a visual perspective, it definitely helps see where some of the artistic influence on this book is from. There’s an art and photo gallery included, too.
There’s just not much in comics that has the sheer brilliance of Locke and Key. While this is a fine collection, as is all the material, if by chance this is your first exposure to the story, do yourself a favor and pick up the rest of this series because it’s one of the best things that’s happened to comic books in the 21st century. And if you are someone familiar, this is a great collection of the one-shot stories that shouldn’t be missed.
