What To Watch this Christmas Season When the Old Classics Won’t Do
Christmas Time is here! As well as Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, Festivus and many more. Time to put on the old Charlie Brown and Rankin-Bass specials. Not in the mood, you say? Well, here are a few alternatives that may get you in the holiday spirit.
The Proud Family-Seven Days of Kwanzaa
The Proud Family was no ordinary cartoon. For kids like me it was culture. That was certainly on display in The Seven Days of Kwanzaa. In this episode, a family of angels came down to teach the proud family all about Kwanzaa and the deep meanings behind the celebration. The food, the clothes, the honor and respect given to elders. As a child watching this episode, it was an eye opener to the many traditions celebrated during this winter season. In my opinion, its one of the best Proud Family episodes of all time.
Justice League-Comfort and Joy
How does the Justice League celebrate the most wonderful time of the year? Green Lantern shows Hawkgirl the fun of a white Christmas. The Flash plays Santa for a group of wide eyed kids. But what of Big Blue and the Lone Martian? In this episode, Superman shares his family traditions with J’onn back at the Kent farm. There’s Christmas sweater, hot cocoa, and lead wrapped gifts from “Santa”. There’s no way you could skip past this episode this year.
A Garfield Christmas
I watched this for the first time about a week ago as part of my mom’s personal 25 Days of Christmas movie list. That’s a fun Christmas special. Jon, Odie, and Garfield head out to the farm to spend Christmas with the family. Of course this movie is full of laughs and emotion. I’m certainly adding this to my Christmas movie library right next to Barbie’s Christmas Carol and Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer.
X-Men Evolution-On Angel’s Wings
This holiday season, a Christmas Angel makes himself known. Warren Worthington is done hiding and strikes out for the common good. There’s no Christmas without its Grinch, and that takes the form of Magneto! Luckily, the Master of Magnetism can’t steal the X-Men holiday spirit. I give this episode bonus points for the Pryde family Hanukkah and Ebeneezer Wolverine. This episode ends with good feelings all around.
Bill and Opus-A Wish for Wings that Work
This movie was suggested by a fellow Outright Geekery team member, so I decided to give it a watch. Its strange but a decent film. Bill and Opus explores the concept of the penguin who wants to fly. Like I said strange movie, but its kind of a fun watch. I do enjoy the animation and humor. I give this one a thumbs up.
Batman the Animated Series-Christmas With The Joker
♪ Jingle Bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg. Batmobile lost a wheel, and the Joker got away! ♪ Come, on. You all knew this was coming. Sometimes, even villains make a move on Christmas. While Robin is determined to get Batman out of the holiday slump, the Joker is up to his old tricks with a Christmas twist. This episode was wild from start to finish and was so fun to watch. Giant Santa on a tank, gift wrapped cops, explosive trains, creepy hand puppets. What more do you need? Don’t be like Batman and try to make it past the title.
Static Shock-Frozen Out
Tis the season for partying, am I right? As Virgil scrambles through Hanukkah party, a Kwanzaa celebration, newcomer Permafrost is gonna give the whole city frostbite. Static Shock is a cartoon that’s no stranger to social/political issues. The message is not so subtle either. Homelessness, mental illness, interfaith relationships, and the importance of a community giving back are plastered in this episode. Its the season of giving and helping your fellow man. That’s the true meaning of Christmas.
The Star Wars Holiday Special
Remember how I told you that Bill and Opus was strange? Well, forget about that. The Star Wars Holiday Special definitely takes the cake. I’m gonna be brutally honest and say that every part of me wanted to turn it off, but I had to keep watching to see the end. The question remains, would I watch this again? It would take a serious amount of boredom and willpower to watch it again, but maybe. Well, at least there’s some holiday cheer in a galaxy far, far away.
