The Toys That Made Us: Dip Your Toe In Nostalgia
There is a new series on Netflix called The Toys That Made Us where it looks back at the history of the toys we have known as a child (well if you grew up in the 1980’s) and their evolution until today. Currently there are four episodes available: Star Wars, Barbie, He-Man and G.I.Joe.
My favorite episode was the one of the Star Wars toys, I had no idea there was such a struggle to bring out the toys in time. There was so much happening in such a short period of time and it is exciting to discover the people who made it all happen.
As with the other episodes it discusses the creator of the toy, why they created it, the initial reception of the toys themselves and their redesigns throughout the years. I like how it focuses on the people behind the toys and not just the inventors. But the everyone who was closely involved in the creation of childhoods. I find it refreshing to discover the at times darker sides of the toys I used to like as a child. Remarkable also is how much those toys have influenced people back then to become who they are today. Granted the episode focuses mostly on toy series that mainly consisted of dolls and their accessories but hopefully as the series evolves it may tackle games, computer games, and other forms of play that does not involve dolls.
You do not need to be a toy aficionado to appreciate the episodes, nor did you have to play with all of them but you surely have them somewhere in the nostalgia of your mind. It is wonderful to discover the why and who behind these huge brands and to see that they cared just as much as you did about your toys. Sure their main goal was money but if there was no love for the toys themselves, money or not, they would not have been created in the first place.
I can highly recommend to check out this series, it is well worth the time to discover more and maybe inspire you to become the inventors of the future.
