Comics We’re Excited About in 2018
The New Year is here, Geeks! Gone is 2017, for what it was worth, and with the new born baby that is 2018 we get to look ahead at some of the comics we’re excited about in 2018, and there’s a slew of them. Some of the Outright Geeks here at the site our taking a break from podcasting, reviewing comics, and other nerdy stuff to call out some of the things that have them stoked for the new year. Let us know what’s got you excited in a comment or find us at the Facebook Page.

Unicron: The Darkest Hour
I just can’t help myself. I’m a huge Transformers fan! I do a podcast dedicated to the entire TF universe, but all of my Transformers love stems from those G1 cartoons, and there’s nothing bigger and badder from G1 than Unicron. While the IDW Publishing take on the franchise has certainly grown-up with the fanbase – delivering some of the richest relationships, compelling characters, and relevant storylines in all of comics – Unicron is a game-changer. He exists to destroy universes, and I’m as much worried as I am excited for the monster’s arrival.
Spencer & Locke Volume 2
Imagine Calvin and Hobbs, but dirty and gritty. Check your childhood innocents at the door, it won’t survive the next trip! The first chapter left you with your jaw on the floor, as you couldn’t help but get emotional. This next chapter is guaranteed to be just as amazing, just as jaw dropping, and will have you asking, “just how wicked are Pepose and Santiago?”
After a not-so-successful run back near the beginning of the current Valiant universe, this character has been either completely unseen or only shown up in other characters’ books. Finally, he’s getting his own title again. Plus, Valiant is bringing fresh new talent into their universe to tell this story with writer Andy Diggle. The art is being handled by Stephen Segovia, and if you’re at all familiar with his work you know that this will be a great looking book.
The book I’m looking forward to the most this year is The Terrifics from Jeff Lemire and Ivan Reis. If the creative team wasn’t enough (and it is), I’m excited about reading a good exploration book, something akin to the FF or Planetary. Also, I’m stoked to see a book featuring Plastic Man, one of my favorite underused characters. Should be a real treat.
This was the title that I was hoping Bendis would be writing and it seems like we will get that out of the gates. I’m expecting an approach like he took on Daredevil where the focus was on the person, with the cape being secondary. Superman is the most interesting character in comics, if someone knew how to do it. I see Bendis exploring what it must be like to be a god pretending to be a man.
It’s been the shocker of the year and it’s incredible! As someone who has issues with depression/anxiety, it really hits home. Plus, although I have theories, I’m unsure where it’s going and I really like that.
The first issue of this Image Comics series may have come out in December 2017, but I’m really looking forward to the whole story, which comes out in 2018. Do not miss this one.
I’m looking forward to The Switch. What’s The Switch you may ask? Well it’s a Kickstarter project being done by Tom Nguyen and Keith Champagne. I’ve been waiting awhile to get my hands on this book since I found out about it around a year ago. I’m hoping 2018 is the year I get find more about the mysterious new super hero The Switch!!
Everything from Eric Heisserer at Valiant
2017 introduced Academy Nominated screenwriter Eric Heisserer to the Valiant Universe. Heisserer wrote Secret Weapons, a unique take on super powers and lame super powers. In 2018 he will be bringing back more of that story and those characters with a couple zero issues. He will also be splitting the writing duties on the highly anticipated Valiant event with Matt Kindt (X-O Manowar, Mind MGMT) in Harbinger Wars 2. Valiant has produced some great event since their return to n 2012, and this event in 2018 is set to keep moving in a positive direction. Harbinger Wars 2 will be four issues each with 44+ pages, 1/2 from Kindt and Tomas Giorello (X-O Manowar, Ninja-k), and the other 1/2 from Heisserer with Raul Allen and Patricia Martin (Secret Weapons).
Favorite Marvel thing I am looking for. The return of the Odinson and the death or Jane Foster. How with Thor deal with her passing and will she be reborn in Valhalla, will she still be in the comics and working with Thor kind of like his concious or mentor ala Obi Wan. Thor has been one of my favorite reads for a long time. As a side note the return of Bruce Banner.
