Armstrong And The Vault Of Spirits – A Comic Review
Last year, Valiant Entertainment released a bunch of one-shots. Some were good and some were not so good. I can say that when Armstrong And The Vault of Spirits one-shot was announced last year, it conjured up memories of some of those one-offs and I wasn’t exactly excited for this, even though it did bring Fred Van Lente back to Archer And Armstrong and I feel he has constantly had strong work with them.
The Vault Of Spirits is Armstrong’s private liquor reserve and he can go once a year to get a good buzz on. This year, Archer, Faith and Punk Mambo all get to hang with Aram for his one quick drink-on and sure enough, there’s trouble brewing with the Sect, a group comprised of different A & A villains, who are waiting for a crack at our heroes.
There’s a lot I feel could be spoiled and I’m trying to write this review without spoiling a few things. I can say I loved this one-shot a lot. It brought back a few things that I have had some questions about and was a complete package. There are a few characters brought back into the mix that I feel the fans will be excited for. I loved the flashbacks used here to show how all of the current trouble stemmed from and the story just works so well.
Fred Van Lente can’t tell a bad story involving Archer And Armstrong, and really, he doesn’t really tell bad stories, period. Just like his ongoing run with those characters, this one-shot is a great mix of action and comedy. He’s the perfect scribe for them. Along for the ride on this is CAFU and Darick Robertson, each does their artistic thing and in the end, the finished product is an awesome comic experience that Valiant fans are sure to love. Truly, if you liked his Archer And Armstrong or his work on Ivar, Timewalker, this is just one more quality chapter in the story of their lives.
