Director Ava DuVernay Set to Direct Jack Kirby’s The New Gods
With the record breaking Black Panther adding to the MCU’s already killer lineup DC has been playing catch up since the release of Man of Steel. With minuscule Box Office numbers in comparison to it’s longtime rival DC/Warner Bros needed to make a major move and fast. Enter Ava DuVernay, Hollywood’s latest directorial golden child. Literally fresh off of her critically acclaimed A Wrinkle in Time has been enlisted to direct The New Gods and give the DC cinematic universe the creative shot in the arm it desperately needs.
This is an interesting move on many levels. On one hand DC has brought in a big money director in DuVernay who’s already shown she has range having directed Selma prior to her latest film. Also working directly with Oprah in both Selma and A Wrinkle in Time means she can play with the biggest and baddest names in show business which can bode well for future casting choices (takes notes DC/Warner Bros). This goes a long way towards getting back to respectability for the company. If A Wrinkle in Time is any indication, Orion, Big Barda, Mr Miracle, and the uber evil Darkseid will look breathtaking on the big screen.
I can’t help but wonder if this is DC/Warner Bros perfectly trolling the MCU or not. The New Gods were the brainchild of Jack King Kirby, comic book god and longtime Marvel artist. He created them with the sole purpose of adding them to the mix in the Marvel Universe. But due to a disagreement between artist and company (not at all typical for Marvel) the King took his talents to DC and the rest is history.
Whatever the case may be after producing only one bona fide hit with Wonder Woman DC/Warner Bros appear to be heading in the right direction with Ava DuVernay and The New Gods. Let’s hope that the combo gives the struggling franchise the lift it needs. Because unlike it’s comic book universe fans will not stick around for the DC/Warner Bros reboot.
