5 Reasons You Should Be Absolutely Stoked for Shattered Grid
The highly anticipated Power Rangers crossover event–Shattered Grid–kicks off in this week’s Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers #25. Ahead of the book’s release, we’ve got 5 reasons that you should be absolutely stoked for this series.
5. Every. Power. Ranger. Ever.
Shattered Grid’s marketing has touted that every Power Ranger ever will, in one way or another, be part of this crossover event. That’s:
Mighty Morphin’. Alien. Zeo. Turbo. In Space. Lost Galaxy. Lightspeed Rescue. Time Force. Wild Force. Ninja Storm. Dino Thunder. S.P.D. Mystic Force. Operation Overdrive. Jungle Fury. RPM. Samurai. Megaforce. Dino Charge. Ninja Steel.
It’s a tall order, but if the promotional images are any indication, BOOM fully intend to deliver on that promise.
And while that’s epic-level stuff (there is 25 years’ worth of Power Rangers, after all), what’s truly exciting is Shattered Grid’s potential to open the BOOM Power Rangers franchise up to new readers.
The BOOM series has hinted at other Power Ranger iterations from the last 25 years, but has thus far stuck pretty exclusively to the classic Mighty Morphin’ version. With every Ranger ever on the table for Shattered Grid, though, the franchise will open up to new readers who found and loved Power Rangers after 1996.
4. “No Ranger is Safe”
One of the most refreshing and surprising aspects of the MMPR franchise at BOOM has been the mature take on the characters and concepts. BOOM has struck a great balance between honoring the source material while updating it for the modern reader, similarly to what IDW has with its Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise.
And with this modern take on Power Rangers comes more sophisticated storytelling that can deal with more mature themes. In the most recent arc of the series, it was revealed that a previously unknown team of Rangers existed in 1969 and that most of those Rangers were killed in action. So, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that we could see a Ranger fall in Shattered Grid.
In fact, writer Kyle Higgins and BOOM have not been shy about throwing around the phrase “No Ranger is Safe.” And with every Power Ranger ever on the table, Higgins certainly has options if he wanted to give a Ranger the old Power Axe.
3. The Ranger Slayer
BOOM has promised readers every Power Ranger ever for Shattered Grid, but the publisher is even throwing in a “brand new” one for good measure–The Ranger Slayer!
The Ranger Slayer’s identity was seemingly revealed in the final pages of Go Go Power Rangers #8, and then confirmed this past weekend at WonderCon. Given the face behind the Ranger Slayer helmet–and their ties to the MMPR team–the upcoming confrontation between the two will definitely be personal in nature.
And the stakes certainly feel higher in light of the revelation. As I mentioned above, Power Rangers have died before. So, if the Ranger Slayer’s codename is an indication of things to come, a Ranger may, in fact, die before the dust from Shattered Grid settles.
2. Epic Megazord Battles
From everything that’s known about Shattered Grid, the story looks to be a mature take on the Power Rangers franchise. By all indications, it will engage readers in the same way the best, most thoughtful comics do.
But let’s be honest, sometimes we just want to turn off our brains off and watch two Pacific Rim Jaegers made of freaking dinosaurs beat the hell out of each other.
A few weeks ago, BOOM teased a new Megazord for Shattered Grid that appeared to be made up of various parts of the Thunderzords. This called back to the Typhonis Megazord seen in the pages of Power Rangers: Pink last year, which featured mashup of the Thunderzords, albeit a far less sinister-looking take on the idea.
This past weekend at WonderCon, the name of this new Megazord was revealed to be the “Gravezord,” which, as its name suggests, will be made up of the dead Zords from Lord Drakkon’s universe.
With every Power Rangers team ever playing a role in Shattered Grid, there’ll be a lot of giant robots on call for the seemingly inevitable Megazord battle royale.
We’ve got 5 words for you: Alternate. Reality. Evil. Tommy. Oliver.
Tommy Oliver–played on the original television show by Jason David Frank–is arguably (definitely) the most popular Power Ranger of all time. So popular, in fact, that Frank was brought on to play Lord Drakkon in the promotion for Shattered Grid. Check out this awesome trailer for the event with Frank playing Lord Drakkon:
When this evil alternate earth version of Tommy—Lord Drakkon— first showed up in the pages of MMPR, it was a game changer. It was the moment the series showed readers that this book was something more than a nostalgia trip. That it was going to take these character and concepts and open them up to all of the best comic book tropes—alternate realities, time travel, secret histories, and so on.
With each successive arc of the series, Higgins and company have continually outdone themselves. So, when it was announced that Drakkon would return as the main antagonist for Shattered Grid, the epic-factor of the whole crossover went off the charts.
Shattered Grid kicks off this Wednesday in Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers #25, from Kyle Higgins and Dan Mora. Ahead of its release, you can check out our near-perfect review of MMPR #25 here!
