What does go into the making of mans best friend? Valiant attempts to answer this as we get a look into the history of one of the most interesting characters to come out of comic books as of late. Stemming from the Bloodshot Island story arc, we got introduced to a slew of new versions of Bloodshot, Tank man, Viet-Man, Cold Man, Deathmate, and everyones favorite…Bloodhound.
Now, while everyone else has had a backstory elaborated for them, the one we were wanting the most, we never got. That is, until now. Bloodhound has been by Rays side ever since they paired up in that story arc (which in iteslf stems from a heart wreching “Death” in the pages of Book of Death: The Fall of Bloodshot). Since that story, he has helped cure the city of New York, fight of a neo religous cult, ans as of this article, has been through hell (Deadside). All while it seems with a dog smile on his face, as he is being loyal to Ray. Now, we get to hear his story.
Jeff Lemire has created one of the most endearing Valiant characters ever. I am a dog person at heart, so when I see Bloodhound leaping into action, Im immediatly paying more attention as he has now become my favorite character. Jeff and Ray have created a very believable back story of valiant bravery, brotherhood, and genuine loss. I was moved to near tears at the end of the story.
Renato Guedes has been knocking it out of the park as of lately. HIs run of Bloodshot: SAlvation as of late has done nothing but show how wide of a range his artistic abilities are. From his depictions of the Deadside, to showing the love between Ray and Magic. I have been extremely impressed with his work.
While were are now at issue #9, this story does not take place in the telling of this newest arc, more like stopping to take a breather and tell the story of one of Valiants most interesting characters. Which is good, as it not only allows us readers a chance to get close with Bloodhound, but we get to take stock in what his actual role in this universe actually is. I have a feeling that when we finally see the end onf Bloodhound, its going to be something so heartfelt, something so emotionally gripping that I may not be able to finish reading the story, and I could not be happier to hae been able to read all these great stories with him in it!
