Power Rangers Legacy Wars Ryu Ranger Revealed
I am going to be real with you here for a minute people. I have many great loves in my life. Two of the biggest, that I have carried with me since childhood, that I have created lifelong friendships because of, helped build a career on, and met the love of my life with, are Street Fighter and Power Rangers.
Power Rangers Legacy Wars is a mobile fighting game that has been going on for quite some time, and crossed over with Street Fighter quite some time ago, which saw the Street Fighter V versions of Ryu, Chun Li, Guile, Cammy, Akuma, and M. Bison join the game as playable characters. It is awesome and I was very happy about it.
Now comes today. Thursday of San Diego Comic Con 2018 and nWay and Lionsgate announced the next level of their Power Rangers crossover with Street Fighter;
Ryu… is a Power Ranger.
No, I did not stutter. Ryu has become the 7th Mighty Morphin Power Ranger, being given a Dino Buckler morpher and the Crimson Hawk Power Coin to become the “Ryu Ranger”. There isn’t much more I can add to that besides simply showing you:
Not only that, Bat in the Sun, the company behind the Super Power Beat Down series (which previously featured a Ryu vs. Green Ranger video) is doing a short film releasing this fall that features Jason David Frank, the original Green Ranger, joining Ryu and Chun Li to battle M. Bison and (presumably) Rita Repulsa who has brought Bison back from the dead.
I can scarcely describe the joy it brings me to see two of my childhood heroes, Ryu and Tommy Oliver, together fighting side by side. It actually brought tears to my eyes.
The full press release from nWay is below, and the Ryu Ranger update is available right now for Power Rangers Legacy Wars, which you can download from the Google Play Store, iTunes, and the Amazon App Store.

“Power Rangers: Legacy Wars – Street Fighter Showdown” Short Film from Bat in the Sun Productions Will Introduce Ryu Ranger to Fans
The iconic Street Fighter® character Ryu is crossing over to the Power Rangers realm as a new addition to the Rangers in Power Rangers: Legacy Wars mobile game from nWay and Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF.A, LGF.B). Announced at San Diego Comic-Con by nWay, Hasbro, Capcom Co., Ltd. and Lionsgate, Ryu Ranger allows players to wield the gravitational Hadoken-blasting, Shoryuken-striking powers of Ryu in Power Ranger form as a new character.
After he and his friends were sucked into the Morphin Grid, Ryu was presented with his own Crimson Hawk Power Coin, allowing him to morph into the Ryu Ranger, and team up with the Power Rangers to take on the deadly duo of M. Bison and Rita Repulsa. Combining his Crimson Hawk Power Coin with the power of Hado, Ryu Ranger’s Hadoken takes the shape of the hawk, lifting his opponents into the air, and his Tatsumaki uses the strength of a hawk’s wings to trap his opponents.
“With more than 36 million installations and 500 million matches played, Power Rangers: Legacy Wars has truly created its own universe and it only continues to grow in popularity,” said Taehoon Kim, CEO of nWay. “In addition to a AAA game with a large and growing player base and esports scene, we’re introducing one-of-a-kind crossovers and collaborations, as well as creating brand new characters between titles. Nobody has seen anything like the Ryu Ranger before.”
To tell the story of Ryu Ranger, nWay, Hasbro and Lionsgate partnered with Qualcomm, G Fuel, and the fan-favorite production company Bat in the Sun, famous for Super Power Beat Down, to produce the short film Power Rangers: Legacy Wars – Street Fighter Showdown. A teaser for the video that was introduced to fans at Comic-Con by the iconic Mighty Morphin Green Ranger Jason David Frank can be found here. Frank also played Power Rangers: Legacy Wars with a few lucky fans at Lionsgate’s booth. The full-length short film will be released in the fall. In addition to the video, the partnership group will also be hosting in-game Power Rangers: Legacy Wars tournaments at San Diego Comic-Con and giving real-world prizes including Razer phones powered by Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ Mobile Platform and Power Rangers G Fuel shakers
“We’re excited to morph a key Street Fighter like Ryu into a mighty Ranger and to introduce him through an exciting new piece of video content as we continue to find innovative ways for gamers to enjoy Power Rangers: Legacy Wars,” said Daniel Engelhardt, Senior Vice President of Interactive Ventures & Games at Lionsgate. “We’re also very proud to be working with great companies such as G Fuel and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. on this unique collaboration that brings together fun gameplay, original storytelling, and direct fan engagement.”
