Warner Brothers…What Are You Doing?
We learned a few things over this last week in regards to Warner Brothers and it’s DC Extended Universe of movies. In this article, I’ll attempt to map out a series of events that lead to a conclusion that Warner Brothers is in the midst of a DC Universe reboot..
The first inklings was when news that Ben Affleck stepped down fairly quickly as director of his solo Batman movie. Now this did cause quite a few heads to be scratched. Although the movies were beset by troubles (Snyder’s daughter’s suicide during filming of Justice League various script rewrites, and the backlash from all the rotten tomatoes reviews), there are a few of us who enjoyed those movies. To me they were good popcorn flicks.
Fast forward about a year. 2017 announced a stand alone Joker movie would be made. OK, cool. Leto was pretty decent in Suicide Squad. Wait…it has nothing to do with anything that was previously made? What? Ok….well, who is going to play the part? Joaquin Phoenix? Ok, at least it so had a decent actor to play the part.
We then get news that James Gunn was fired for some BS reasoning from Marvel. Totally derailing Guardians of The Galaxy. Many thought that was the last we would see of Gunn. Boy were we wrong! Warner Brothers scoops him up to write a Suicide Squad movie. Ok, that’s weird. Two separate movies with 2 different Jokers? Well, Fox and Marvel did it with Quicksilver, so it could be cool. Wait, he’s not making a sequel, but a different take on the Suicide Squad?!
Ok, what else can go on top of this…
Warner Brothers says “Hold my beer”.
Ben Affleck is out as Batman, and casting has been done for a Batman prequel movie. Henry Cavill is questionable to return as Superman.
Ok. Now that we have gotten past the the articles, I’m gonna lay out, in what I think, is Warner Brothers DC Extended Universe roadmap. Lets start with the stand alone Joker movie. They get it in their heads we should go back to basics. Lighter in tone. They then hear the news about James Gunn, so they scoop him up, and give him another superhero team movie, Suicide Squad. He then outs the previous version for what is to be a different movie with a lighter tone. See, Warner Brothers was already heading in that route with the first Wonder Woman movie, the Justice League (It was waaay lighter in tone than BvS: DoJ), and the upcoming Shazam, Wonder Woman 84, and Aquaman movies. I figure since they were already heading in that direction, all it took was getting Gunn on board that was the tipping point. Word is they’re kicking things back down to basics.
I haven’t even touched on the fact the Flash movie was pushed back 2 years!
This is all worrisome. It tends to suggest the DC universe of movies is in real trouble. This could be DC’s last stand!
Let us know what you all think!
