ARCHIE MCPHEE store review
ARCHIE MCPHEE store review
Let me start out by saying that I usually write about popular media, and I must admit, I don’t usually review stores.
However, I’m so impressed by the Seattle novelty store ARCHIE MCPHEE that I wanted to spread the word – and I want to say right up front that neither I nor anyone I know has any personal or business connection to the store, nor does anyone connected to this website. As always, my opinions are my own.
SHORT VERSION : ARCHIE MCPHEE has all things geek ! Toys, games, miniatures, masks, costumes and disguises, magic tricks and science kits, and more! Free shipping on orders over $35! Become acknowledged as a grandmaster of giving, and load up on geek gear, too !
ARCHIE MCPHEE : THE DETAILS
The ARCHIE MCPHEE store has been a Seattle institution for 35 years, selling all manner of weird and wonderful novelties, oddities and curiosities. Its bright red storefront is hard to miss, what with its yellow awning and neo-Primitive mural work. Anybody visiting Seattle should go there to see The Rubber Chicken Museum, The Wallingford Beast, and other amusing installations.
However, the most amazing thing about the store is its merchandise.
The first thing that surprised me about the products was how well-made they are. For example, all of the toys have a sturdy, substantial feel, like the toys of yesteryear – not surprising, considering how many grown-ups are buying these toys.
The second surprising thing was how inexpensive everything is.
For example, there are over 150 gift items under $5.
The next thing that struck me was the selection : ARCHIE MCPHEE carries 10,000 different products ! It’s hard to know where to start, so I would just direct you to the online catalog. It does a better job of describing the products than I can.
The Geek Gifts are often too cool for words, from the the Dashboard Genius line, e.g., bobbing William Shakespeare and bobbing Ludwig Beethoven to the Jane Austen Action Figure and from the Ultimate Geek Pen to the Lindberg model kits (remember those?) for the human eye, ear and tooth. Of course, the Geek Pennant is a must-have at $4.50.
So get those orders in now, to make sure they’re in sync with Santa Claus’ distribution system – and Happy holidays !
COLLECTIBILITY ? *
OVERALL 5 **
* I’m not a toy collector, but it appears that many of the store’s products are only made in very limited quantities. Isn’t that built-in collectibility ?
** I can’t rate the quality of their shipping/delivery, since I’ve never bought anything online from the store.
