Technofreak Cover for Issue #2 Reveal
Sunday Lunch Comic’s seminal title Technofreak which debuted earlier this year has garnered critical acclaim as well as commercial success. Acclaimed DC Vertigo author Mike Carey said of the series that it was “Full of energy and inventiveness. A noir with dazzlingly bright highlights”. Set in an dystopian future with a refined sense of the Tech Noir concept touched upon by cinematic classics such as Blade Runner and The Terminator. Technofreak features a private detective with a difference, Jon Sherlock is a cybernetically enhanced human, the only surviving member of an initiative to meld man with machine. The rest of the Technofreaks have since gone insane, a prospect with Sherlock fears for his future. His skills enable him to jack into the systems which govern national security and download new skills whenever needed. This series delivers a sense of hard boiled film noir, Sci-Fi fantasy mixed with outrageous laugh out loud humour. With innovative writing and beautifully detailed artwork this has been a hit with comic fans and lovers of ingenious story telling.
Issue #2 has been announced and creator John Charles has given Outright Geekery an exclusive look at the cover design. As expected it’s bold and evokes a sense of a noir cinematic poster from the 1940’s. The issue’s subtitle is ‘The Dame and the Damned’ and is due for release in the first quarter of next year. It also features an additional story focusing on one of the narratives breakout characters, the talking cat called Maurice. This character is cleverly utilised as a witty method of exposition throughout Jon Sherlock’s adventures and provides an incredibly developed sense of humour throughout the strips. Penned by Stephanie Mary Jackson and Hannah Stanway, this tale is a sophisticated homage to the Hanna – Barbera classic Tom and Jerry.
