One Bad Santa: A Review of The List #1
Last Christmas, I told our readers about a Kickstarter campaign for a holiday comic called The List! Written by James Stimpson, the book tells the story of Salvador, a member of the Santa Squad. For most of the Squad’s members, their job is to deliver toys to all the good little boys and girls nationwide. But for Sal, the baddest Santa of them all, his job is to save children from the monsters of the world. From kidnappers to child molesters to evil parents, if a child is in danger, it’s Sal’s job to help them see another Christmas.
Unfortunately, the trauma involved in Sal’s job has been taking a toll on him. Always one not to be messed with, Sal is starting to become a loose cannon. The other Santa’s are starting to get nervous. Jesus (Yes, that very one), the head of the Santa Squad, has faith in his prodigal St. Nick. But behind the curtains of the covert team of Kris Kringles, a player is conspiring to take Sal down once and for all…

With such shocking subject matter as the abuse and killing of children, The List is not a title for everyone. It pulls very little punches and but it thoroughly entertains. The List is gritty, dark and very bloody, especially thanks to the artwork of Italian artist Liana Recchione. Fans of tougher holiday films such as Black Christmas or Die Hard will love this digital comic.
This is not exactly your typical St. Nick tale. The idea of a team of Santas getting the job done as one man can’t do it alone has been done before. But turning it into a sort of CIA operation with the Son of God as the agency chief is completely and refreshingly new!
Using Christ in such a way as used in this comic could be comical. But Stimpson does a brilliant job of keeping Jesus biblical without going overboard. It would also be easy to turn Jesus into some sort of blasphemous caricature of himself, cussing out his operatives when they go rogue as Sal does. Yet, in this comic, Jesus might not be safe to be around; but he is good.
The first issue is currently on sale at ComixCentral. With still over a week left in the holidays (New Year’s included), there’s plenty of time to add The List to your collection! I only hate that there’s only one issue available. But as all proceeds of the comic are going to ensure a second chapter, hopefully, the wait for the continued adventures of Sal won’t be very long.
