Review – Grumble Vol. 1 – You’re The Dog Now, Man
Grumble vol. 1: You’re The Dog Now, Man
Writer: Rafer Roberts
Artist: Mike Norton
Colorist: Marissa Louise
Tala and Eddie are on the run but for different reasons. Eddie is a con man and he’s got the Imp after him. And the Imp, well, he’s an actual imp. Tala has something after her, too, and it’s unlike anything we’ve seen before. These two are brought together when Tala goes to meet the man she saw in her mom’s old photos. There’s something different about them, too. Tala has powers and Eddie dabbles in that world, too. Unfortunately, he’s stuck looking like a pug. Maybe it’s just a Baltimore thing. Regardless, I t’s this and more that makes up Grumble vol. 1: You’re The Dog Now, Man
Rafer Roberts and Mike Norton teamed for a good chunk of 2016’s A & A: The Adventures Of Archer And Armstrong from Valiant Entertainment. It was a book with a lot of unique characterization, good humor and wild settings. Grumble is that turned up a bit higher. The humor here is more refined, with dialogue not at all for the kiddos. Rafer does very well with the dialogue and it feels like that is the real strength of the writing. Tala and Eddie have unique voices and personalities which separate them and it shows in the writing.
With the rising popularity of fantasy, it’s enjoyable reading a story that fuses fantasy or magical elements into a real world setting but doesn’t play it so strict.
No book with pugs would be complete without Mike Norton working on it. Visually, he’s doing a lot with the story. There are some fantastic character designs, especially with the S’taera, the other-worldly creatures that are on Tala’s trail. The colors by Marissa Louise are great, too. It’s a book with some vibrant colors that help accentuate the art proper. And after adding Crank’s letting to this all of this, it all matches up with Rafer’s writing quite well.
Grumble vol. 1: You’re The Dog Now, Man was a book I had a lot of fun reading. Big on humor and adventure, it’s a story I can easily recommend to someone looking for something different to read. Rafer and Mike are making a quality book each month and these first 5 issues presented here showcase the proper ways to doing adult humor.
