BAM: When you were a kid, what was your favorite Halloween costumes you loved to wear? Did you play dress-up early in life?
KT: I would say my favorite Halloween costume was my Catwoman costume back in 2015. This was the costume that launched my cosplay career. I loved all of my costumes! I was huge on playing dress up and for one of my birthdays, I received an entire wardrobe filled with Disney costumes. I remember when I was young I wanted to be a vampire, a devil, and a princess for Halloween. My parents told me I couldn’t be them all, so I came up with an original character that was all three of those things in one. It was a huge hit.
BAM: What was your first cosplay outfit character? Did you feel you were the character? What sort of feedback did you get from people seeing you in character?
KT: My first character besides Catwoman was Juliet Starling. My wig was pretty bad, and so I felt extremely uncomfortable as the character. I think if I were to revisit this cosplay I would feel amazing in it, so maybe I will have to.
BAM: As a woman, does size matters (height, bra, or weight) when playing a character? How do you decide on what sort of character to portray? Is it the material cost? The type of character you love? Or, is it all for the “Shock Value”? Or all three?
BAM: Is there any character that you would love to do, like Gender bend or something out of the ordinary? Does your cosplay push the envelope in shock value?
KT: I don’t think it matters at all. People can cosplay whoever they want. I mean, I’m only 5’ tall and I cosplayed Wonder Woman. A big deciding factor for cosplay is availability and material cost. If there are costumes I can’t make myself or parts of a costume I need to make sure there is commissioners or sellers out there that can provide the pieces for me. I never do anything for shock value, it’s just not my thing. I like to cosplay characters that I love and that I think will make me feel pretty.
BAM: Do you consider yourself a Geek or a Nerd? Do these words offend you? Do you think being a nerd is cool/sexy?
KT: I think of myself as more of a Geek. I am good at school and am smart, but not when it comes to math or science. These words are only offensive if you let them be. Try to own them.
BAM: Are all the cosplay outfits you create are reflections of your personality? Or is your personality a reflection of your outfits?
KT: I think it’s a mix of both. I like to cosplay characters that will fit my girly personality.
BAM: What’s been your favorite outfit? Have you done any photoshoots different from cosplaying?
KT: My favorite outfit right now is my MeMe-Chan cosplay. It makes me feel so cute and so kawaii. I used to do normal modeling, but I didn’t like it as much. I love how bubbly and fun cosplay modeling is. You can really let your personality shine. I also like cosplay outfits more than normal fashion outfits.
BAM: Does cosplaying make you feel powerful? Sexy? Envious? Cute?
KT: It makes me feel a mix of all of those, I think. I always feel so cute in my cosplays though whereas the others are occasionally sprinkled in there.
BAM: Do you own any tattoos? If so, what are they and if there’s any meaning behind it? Are there any you really want to have?
KT: I have 3 tattoos. My first one is “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” on my ribs. This one is especially important to me because working for Disney as an Imagineer has always been my goal. The ride, Carousel of Progress where this lyric is from was Walt Disney’s baby. The quote is also in my mom’s handwriting. I have a small minimalistic TIE Fighter on my other rib. This one is just important to me because Star Wars is a huge part of my life. Finally, I have three stars on my foot. This one was done by my best friend’s boyfriend which makes it fun. I want to get a ton more.
BAM: As a social media entertainer, what might be some things you were not prepared for? Like popularity, recognition, feedback from audiences, being more self-conscience about yourself? How did you overcome it?
KT: I prepare for everything, as this was something I always wanted for a long time. I don’t think anything took me by surprise.
BAM: What genre are you most drawn to? Marvel, DC, Anime, Manga characters or something else? Ever interested in doing Gender Bender character? If so, what character are you interested in doing?
KT: I love all of those, but I think looking at my cosplay career, I have been most drawn to DC, Marvel, and Star Wars. I’ve done much gender-bend cosplay characters. I’ve done Shazam, Spider-Man, Draco Malfoy, Freddy Krueger, Pennywise, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, etc. The next cosplay character I am doing will be Darth Maul.
BAM: Are you able to profit from your artwork? Or do you suffer like the rest of us? What is the going rate for a typical photo shoot?
KT: Lol. The way you worded it makes me not want to answer that. Yes, I profit from my art. I sell photo sets and that’s what brings in the most income. I typically charge around $40 to $60 for a 10 to 25 photo set.
BAM: Has there been any strange photoshoot requests? What photos of you are you most proud of?
KT: I think when I first started, I got a lot of photo requests for feet sets. I thought it was weird, but now I don’t think it’s weird anymore. I am proud of all the photos I take of myself!
BAM: Who does your photography? Were there steps to decide what photographer you feel comfortable to work with?
KT: I do my own photography. My old photographer was Carlos G. He was amazing but moved away, sadly. I don’t really like working with any strange photographer as it’s hard for me to open up and I’m picky.
BAM: Being a beautiful woman, have you been asked out by someone online/event? Both men or women?
KT: I have, but I always say no. Earlier, in my cosplay career, I was in a very serious long term relationship. Today, I am seeing someone new and I am very happy. Personally, I don’t think I would ever date someone who asked me out online.
BAM: How many conventions do you do a year? When asked to come to a convention, what sort of freebies do you get?
KT: I love going to conventions! I’ve been very busy so I’ve hardly got the chance to go to them. I usually go to one or two a year so if you see me at a convention, it’s rare! When I am a guest at a convention, I usually get a free hotel room, a booth spot, and food.
BAM: When people meet you for the first time, what is the first thing people notice about you? What separates you from other cosplayers?
KT: Everyone comments on how short I am when they first meet me. I think I’m different from other cosplayers because I’m small. Most female cosplayers have huge boobs which are awesome but I have a more different look than other cosplayers have. I also like to add my own twist to almost every character I cosplay instead of going for exact accuracy.
BAM: What can cosplayers do to get more exposure in hopes of becoming more noticeable? What can fans and this reporter see Karrigan doing in the future?
KT: I would say just keep being yourself. Don’t copy others because that won’t get you the exposure you want. In the future, you can see me writing for entertainment companies and maybe creating my own iconic characters that people will cosplay in the years to come.
