Let me start this review by telling you about my Valiant history. I was a teenager in the ’90s when the core characters of Valiant Entertainment came into existence. I spotted Rai and Harbinger and began to ask questions at my local comic shop. The owner told me that those among other titles plus new ones announced were from a hot new publisher called Valiant. Soon after, they couldn’t keep issues of these titles on the shelf. I used to hang out at the shop for hours talking comics with store regulars and made friends that I still have today. Many of these friends got hooked on these characters like I did. I remember when I first asked the owner about Harbinger, his response was “ you collect New Titans and Uncanny right?” Of course, I did, “Then you’re gonna LOVE Harbinger! And Rai? What’s cooler than a superhero that’s a Samurai? From there oh wow what’s this? (Repeated more than once) referring to at the time X-O the closest explanation was, imagine Conan found living alien tech that turning into a weaponized suit of armor. I was like Whoa! That is totally Bas @.. And as you can imagine the new characters and storylines kept flowing and I kept buying very soon nearly my entire pull list with this shop was nothing but Valiant. I was one of many names listed under their “All Valiants” on their reserves list. Then one fatal day there was a sign posted in the store informing all of us that Valiant was going out of business. A sad day indeed but even worse was that a video game company bought them. I for the life of me couldn’t imagine this company doing anything good with these characters I loved so much, sadly that anger led to me trying to read a few of their first issues. I was right they were awful! Flashforward to the launch of Valiant Entertainment!
Just a few titles at first I signed up for XO right away but sadly a certain distributor kept shorting local shops of these issues which led to me dropping them altogether. Then about two years ago I was already writing music reviews and comic reviews for PunkHouse Press when I spotted an ad in a Facebook comic community I belong to for Outright Geekery seeking writers. Soon after Henry the Social Media Manager for OG talked with me and I sent him my interview with Comic Creator and Pro Canadian Wrestler Andy Belanger. He liked it enough to ask me to join the OG team and the rest is history. Along the way however my love for Valiant got jump-started again, since OG is a big supporter of Valiant I had the opportunity to start reviewing new Valiant Entertainment titles and get schooled on what was going on with a couple of Podcasts in the OG network supports both very good fan shows in WhoDoo TV & Get Valiant. I got to dive back into this universe headfirst reading and reviewing a new book as well as getting caught up on the past with a great deal from Humble Bundle as well as some online sales and I haven’t left yet!
It doesn’t matter if you’re like myself and have been a fan since the Valiant name first appeared in the market back in the early ’90s, the Akklaim era, or more recently with Valiant Entertainment. The Valiant Handbook (2019 Edition) is an essential reference guide for everything Valiant. This book literally blew my mind as I went from page to page. I saw characters, duo’s, and entire teams they’re all covered in here. You’ll get bio’s, powers, base of operations, first appearance, enemies, allies, capabilities, recommended reading and so much more. Included in here is just some incredible imagery from anyone and everyone who’s lent their artistic talents past, present, and dare I say future? A huge part of this book is the Valiant Timeline on page 64. That way you know what order to read all those great Valiant titles! You could spend hours, weeks even going through this book over and over again. Over 311 characters in this 40-page book for a mere $3.99?!? Worth it all day long!
If for some reason you don’t believe what I’ve said about this book. When you’re at your favorite shop, flip to the back of the book page 34 I believe it’s right after X-O Manowar. They start listing all sorts of what I think are relative groups just before the Valiant Universe Timeline. This doesn’t leave anything out, it’s so crammed full of seemingly endless information How do you not have this book yet? I’m serious get to wherever you like to buy comic books and grab your copy of the 2019 Valiant Universe Handbook today! Please as always Like, Share, Comment, and Keep, it Geek!
