It was only a decade ago when Archie Comics shocked the world of pop culture, promising to finally have Archie Andrews decide once and for all – Betty or Veronica! The obvious and correct answer is always Betty. However, Archie Comics pulled a bit of a switcheroo and had Archie decide on marrying both!
No – Archie didn’t become a polygamist. (Thought this would make an interesting alternate history storyline.) Instead, the publisher created a series in which fans would be able to see what Archie’s life would be like if he married Betty and Veronica in two different story lines. Thanks to a fork in the road known as Memory Lane, Archie could see what direction his life took if her went with either Betty Cooper or Veronica Lodge.
While a few fans cried foul at having the two parallel stories instead of a definite decision, Archie: The Married Life was a groundbreaking success that was a vital shot in the arm for a publisher seeking a way to stay relevant in a turbulent comics market.
Original storyline writer Michael Uslan returns in this miniseries to bring fans up-to-date on just what has happened after a decade of marriage to both Betty and Veronica. For one couple, life is perfect but the marriage is on the rocks. For the other, the union between man and wife couldn’t be stronger, but life is far from ideal. Readers will just have to find out which version of the Andrews family is which.
Uslan does not just focus on the eternal love triangle between a certain red head boy and a blonde and brunette. Archie: The Married Life 10th Anniversary picks up on Jughead’s ownership of Pop’s with his very unlikely wife, Midge. Moose Mason has become a politician in both story-lines but to varying scopes of influence. And then there’s slime ball Reggie Mantle. Both timelines don’t seem to be very generous to him.
Dan Parent, who in my opinion is the ultimate classic look Archie artist, is in charge of pencils for both stories. I preferred the Archie/Veronica look as opposed to the Betty/Archie version. I know that it’s the same artist behind both tales. But Parent’s artwork looked more classic in the Veronica version.
As readers get two stories for the price of one, expect a lot of surprises. Fan favorite characters make cameos in both timelines. But there’s one surprise return that I’ve been clamoring for a very long time that I was very excited to see. I’d love to tell you just who makes that journey back to Riverdale, but Spoilers!!!
Archie: The Married Life 10th Anniversary #1 opens the door to two alternate looks at Riverdale, 2019. What will fate have in store for the Andrews brides? You’ll just have to read issue #1 and find out for yourself…
Archie: The Married Life 10th Anniversary #1 debuts in print and digital formats on August 7, 2019.
