This first issue was such a tease. Like only getting to watch the opening fifteen minutes of, let’s say, Kill Bill? Yes, I meant to make a pun in the segue I’m about to use. From the very first page, I started thinking about the beginning of that same movie. This book did make me feel like I was watching an alternate version of the wedding chapel scene of that movie. That’s high praise indeed when you can have a book like this that makes you see the story as either real-world or reel world. That feeling, however, ends at the setting of the scene. The story itself, well… it’s complicated, very intriguing and will keep you on the edge of your seat. Every few pages something happens, starting in the background, basically something that you’d catch out of the corner of your eye. All these “sub-plots flourish into something exciting or at least adrenaline pumping that makes you even more thrilled that you started reading this story. The only disappointment is like any good comic you have to wait another 30 days to read the next installment.
David Pepose wrote this book, and I must say it’s much different than the last story I read by him. Basically showing that he has writer’s reach, he can do both sides on the same coin. I’d like to see him with an ongoing anthology series. He’d be perfect for something like that. Another great read from David!
Gavin Guidry handles all the artwork on this book with a helping hand on colors from Liz Cramer. I’ll tell you that I’m just alright with the art in this book. It’s perfectly fine and right in the comfort zone with the look of a lot of non-superhero small press comics these days. Like it was good it just wasn’t great. There were points that it was quite good but other panels just seemed like a quick con sketch instead of finished comic book art.
