Dead Legends #1 (Review) Hiding In Plain Sight
Dead Legends #1
This is an interesting change: I haven’t seen a Kung-Fu comic book in years. There’s a big hat tip to Bruce Lee’s “Enter The Dragon”. This a secret tournament held on an island by invitation only. Starting to sound familiar? We even get someone who looks an awful lot like former U.S. Karate champion Jim Kelly. There’s a funny exchange where he won’t stop complaining about all the stairs when another character asks how he’ll beat anyone up in the tournament if he can’t even climb the stairs. That’s something I can relate to, I always hated doing my cardio workout too. It’s a very fast-paced book, it has a very quick flow that only slows for a bit during flashbacks for us to get some backstory on these characters. This is your basic set up for us to slowly get the big picture over the course of the series. Which is the right direction to go in as long as it’s done well. Definitely a throwback as far as the subject matter is concerned.
James Maddox wrote this book with the passion he had with this genre of movie growing up. I like seeing the respect paid to those who have come before. That’s an instant job well done with that. I would have liked a few more pages of content for a little more on each of the flashbacks. Other than that I think James did a good job with the feel and flow of this book. It is what it is a Kung-Fu comic book with an intense cliff hanger.
Gavin Smith tackled all the art including coloring on this book too. Reminded a little of the 90s independents or dare I even say early Dark Horse where they mixed regular comic art with painted or watercolor backgrounds. Just certain pages had that feel but it was still very cool to see. Considering that Gavin did everything but write and letter this book, he did a really good job. Maybe next issue James can get a colorist on board for this project.
If you’re a kung-fu movie fan you’ll definitely dig this book. The only thing this book was missing was Bruce Lee himself. Granted this was just a small intro to this kung-fu world of Dead Legends but well worth your time. This will be on store shelves this October, check with your local shops to make sure you get your copy! Please Like, Comment, Share, and as always Keep, it Geek!
