Simply put what an amazing read, so this is a biography of Rod Serling. Like most of us, we know him as the creator and host of the classic Twilight Zone. This graphic novel was released to coincide with the 60th Anniversary of the original Twilight Zone. Which was groundbreaking in many ways not to mention how many of us have tried to stay awake through those Twilight Zone marathons? This, however, is not quite that but it is the journey of his life and what drove him to make what today is still considered great TV. The way it’s told is so captivating you won’t be able to put this book down. I personally found this book had me under its spell just a few pages in. It’s literally like watching 50s or 60s television. This has to be one of the most interesting reads in years. Don’t get me wrong I’ve read some great books over the years, even this year. Those, however, were entertaining and for the most part highly entertaining but in a different way. Mostly because I’m such a fan of classic’s like Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, etc that actually learning about this man’s life made it such a compelling read I just want more like this. By George, I’ve got it! This was like the history channel for geeks!
This entire graphic novel was written and illustrated by Koren Shadmi. Now I have to say I’m not a fan of this art, however, it does lend to the storytelling bringing it back to a period piece to early days of television. That being said, did it grow on me? Not so much but I did get used to if for no other reasons than it gives an authentic feeling to this body of work. The coloring work, coloring may be too strong a term since it’s more shades of gray then I’m used to seeing but it texturizes his art in a special way. His writing now that’s a different story entirely. Koren has a compelling flair in his storytelling that kept my nose stuck in this book. Simply put if Rod Serling were here today I believe he would be honored by this heartfelt piece of literature.
Anyone who is a fan of the Twilight Zone this is a must-have for your collection. Even if you’ve never watched a single episode of the show (how can that be?) You’ll still find this very interesting if for no other reason for a historical point of view concerning the history of classic TV. This is an intriguing story of the man behind the cult classic television series. Once you pick it up it will be difficult to put it down, a winning story for sure. The signpost ahead says the Twilight Man in on store shelves right now, how long depends upon you. So get out there and get your copy today! As always Please Like, Comment, Share, and Keep, it Geek!
