For Queen and Cosplay
Tash: Hi my name is Tasha and I am from Northamptonshire in the UK and know in the Cosplay Community as Tasha Cosplay UK but I want to tell people a bit about me outside of Cosplay… A lot of people may not know that I am a massive horror fan and watch a horror film pretty much every night but very few have actually scared me lol. I also love theme parks, dance and am a huge animal/nature lover, which I think is a lot more well known about me. I have 2 cats and they are both smarty pants who play fetch. I am a huge sunshine lover and can be very unmotivated and depressive in the Winter and really struggle keeping the weight off in the Winter too. I am a gamer too and love FPS and platform games but recently have not had the time I need to play ☹
OG: Growing up as a young girl, what sort of kid were you? Were you shy or outgoing? Are you self-conscious about yourself? Was cosplaying a way of escaping from the childhood/teenage pressures?
Tash: Growing up as a kid I was always seen as a bit of a nerd, I loved comics, superhero movies, sci-fi and fantasy tv shows and gaming but back then most girls really weren’t into that type of stuff and as I also didn’t wear make-up or know what to do with my hair
OG: Were you ever bullied? How did you deal with being bullied?
Tash: I was bullied quite a bit and only had 1 or 2 friends at school. I mostly played computer games with my cousin and another boy but neither of them went to my school so I mostly hated school but I still did 11 GCSEs, went to college and later OU and have many qualifications, including a Certificate of Higher Education in Natural Sciences. I never actually heard of Cosplay growing up.
OG: How did you become a professional dancer? Did your dancing background help you move over into cosplaying?
Tash: When I was younger I became a podium dancer (someone saw me dancing and gave me a job) and danced all over in places such as Pacha Ibiza, Es Paradise, Pacha London, Gran Canaria and all over the UK next to DJ’s such as Judge Jules and even bands like the Prodigy, also I was a backing dancer to acts/bands and was also in a fair few videos including the remake of Last Night a DJ Saved my life by Semus Haji. I later trained in Salsa and Bachata and did that for a while but I not danced for a couple of years and the last thing I did was a Charity event to raise money for Cancer Research.
OG: How did you get into cosplaying? How was your first experience?
Tash: When I was a dancer I used to make my own costumes and also then started making them for the whole group/dues/teams so we all matched up, which was really helpful when I started Cosplaying I already knew how to make basic costumes.
OG: What was your first cosplay outfit? Did you make it or did you buy one?
Tash: My first Cosplay was Xena Warrior Princess and I made it in 2 weeks from reference pictures and for under £30 only buying the faux leather and everything else was stuff from home, including a baking tray and drawing pins but I did later make a MK2 and there will be a MK3 as I still feel I never did her justice.
OG: Has it ever been a time where you hated your cosplay outfit, but your fans love it?
Tash: So there was a cosplay I really always hated wearing but fans really liked and that was Elektra, I hated wearing it as it was uncomfortable – to stop the leg and arm wraps falling off they had to be extra tight and I even tried body tape but It never felt right!
OG: You have been cosplaying Dejah Thoris for a while now. It seems your consistency has paid off being on the cover of Cosplay Variant! How did it happen? Is Dejah T. one of your favorite characters?
Tash: Yes so I have been Cosplaying Dejah Thoris for some time now and the first cover happened as Tabitha Lyons wanted to recreate a Cover she had seen for Swords of Sorrow and 4 of us shot it and Gale Simone then saw the image and Tweeted about it and suddenly
Tash: Dynamite wanted us on the cover for the rest of the series, which was my first cover experience. Fast forward a few years I was then contacted by Dynamite asking if I would like to feature on the front of an upcoming issue of Barbarella/Dejah Thoris and of course I said yes and now recently I was asked to feature on the Front of the actual Dejah Thoris Comic, which made be very happy and proud of my work! Cosplay where are live is not really that popular and a lot of people still don’t know what it is lol.
OG: Did Tabitha Lyons really bring out your Nerdy side? Are you each other Spirit animal?
Tash: Me and Tabitha are absolutely each other’s Spirit Animals and we actually met on a TV Show (Take me out the first ever series) and shared a room, we pretended to each other to be like super cool as wanted to be liked but then I saw she had Superman PJs and asked if she was into nerdy stuff and she was like YES! And OMG I was worried I wouldn’t be cool enough and I was like SAME! Haha and we never looked back since 10 years!
OG: As a beautiful woman, does the body-size of a woman matter (The Height, Bra Size, or weight) when performing a character?
Tash: Oh my I don’t even think I can be considered a beautiful woman, you should see me on the sofa with my cats lol! And no body size does not matter as long a you are happy with your size/shape then be the Character you love and put your own mark on it!
OG: What sort of characters are you most drawn to?
Tash: I am always mostly drawn to strong female Characters who I guess are protectors and maybe it has something to do with being bullied at school and I want to protect others from harm.
OG: Are your outfits based on artistry or burlesque?
Tash: I have based 1 or 2 Characters on Artwork but I mostly like to stick a comic, game or tv version.
OG: Are there any cosplay characters you won’t do? Have you ever done body paint yourself? How did that go?
Tash: I don’t think there is anything I would rule out if I feel able to make it but I don’t like body paint much – I have done Widowmaker from Overwatch and so had to paint myself purple/blue and I really hated doing it and even more hated trying to get it off. I do also use body paint for Nidalee but it is only Tribal Markings so much easier.
OG: Would you like to be recognized as a cosplay, dancer of an artist or just a businesswoman who happens to be desired among fans?
Tash: I had not really thought about how I’d like to be recognised, I think my dancing days are gone unless someone wants a Cosplay Dancer working at their event then I’d be up for that. I guess I would like to be seen as an Artist as that covers more than one thing as I do make costume and cosplay but I also do modeling, which is not always Cosplay based and it is totally possible to do both and they are not the same thing, which for some people they seem to struggle to understand.
OG: Do you consider yourself to be a Geek or a Nerd, or simply a Dork? Do any of these words offend you?
Tash: When I was growing up I actually didn’t think I was a Geek or a Nerd but the older I get the more I realise I am a complete Nerd lol! I think Dork is not a word used too much in the UK and could be offensive a bit, although I am not easily offended. I think that being a Geek has definitely made it fully into mainstream pop culture and is considered by a lot of people to be cool.
OG: Other than being a cosplayer, what sort of Geeky things do you do? Is there something you would love to do, but afraid to try?
Tash: Other than cosplaying other nerdy things I like are gaming but also I love documentaries and, star gazing and learning. Actually my ultimate goal is to pick up where I left off my Certificate of Higher Education in Natural Sciences and continue to a Zoology Degree and work in the conservation field. There is not much I am afraid of, I have done a bungee jump twice and love to try new things, it is actually money that is the biggest thing holding me back.
OG: What is life like living in Northamptonshire? Is cosplaying, modeling, photography something mainstream over there?
Tash: Northamptonshire does not even have a City, only towns so really there is not much going on but there are some great shooting locations and it is completely Central to London and Birmingham City so easy to get to either of them in an hour.
OG: Are all the cosplay outfits you create the reflections of your personality? Or is your personality a reflection of your cosplay outfits?
Tash: Pretty much all of my Cosplays are a reflection of who. There have only been 1 or 2 I was asked to do for a job which is different.
OG: What’s been your most difficult/expensive outfit ever?
Tash: The most difficult and expensive Costume may have been my Helsing (Zenescope Comics) as there were a number of different fabrics and techniques, leather, PVC, buckles, suede and a hat to make but the most daunting and challenging in my mind was my Gal Gadot Wonder Woman as I had only made 1 thing out of foam before and that was my Widowmaker Gun so I was worried I wouldn’t be able to do a whole foam build but I did and I was proud of myself, but still can do better next time and have learnt from some mistakes. To be fair though each different costume has its own challenges if requiring a new technique.
OG: Do all your Costumes are sewed by hand or by sewing machine?
Tash: Pretty much all of my Costumes for the first 3 or 4 years of cosplay I sewed by hand as never had a sewing machine, I still don’t have one but my Mum does and I use hers when I need to these days, although I still think you can get a better finish by hand.
OG: How did you get your cosplay name, Tasha Cosplay UK?
Tash: My cosplay name came about as my name is Tasha and I Cosplay but I had to add UK to it when I found out that someone else had been using the name Tasha Cosplay.
OG: Why do cosplayers have cats as pets?
Tash: Why do Cosplayers have Cats as pets?? That’s a weird one as I don’t think they do, I know loads of Cosplayers with Dogs as pets, reptiles and all 3 lol!
OG: When wearing your outfit, you painstakingly created, how does it make you feel? Is it sexy? Cute? Accomplished or Frustrated?
Tash: When wearing an outfit I made, If I am 100% happy with it (rare) then I feel accomplished, happy and confident but if I am not happy with it I can feel frustrated. If the costume is sexy then I will feel sexy and if it’s cute I feel cute.
OG: Do you own any tattoos? If so, what are they and if there’s any meaning behind it? Are there any you really want to have? Are you drawn to mythical creatures?
Tash: I have 3 tattoos, I have a sun on my stomach as I love the sun, a cat on my back as I love cats and a dragon on my thigh (unfinished) as I love Dragons and mythology.
OG: Does it make it difficult to wear a lot of armor props?
Tash: I do no tend to make or wear much amour or props as its not really my thing, I am a sewer. There are soooo many characters on my list still so watch this space.
OG: Are you able to profit from your artwork? Or do you suffer like the rest of us? Do you make a good salary doing what you love?
Tash: I don’t necessarily make money from my Cosplay but have been able to travel to lovely places as a guest judge and panelist. I make a bit of money from selling prints and can make some money from Modelling but I do also have to just suffer and work a 9-5 job like everyone else.
OG: Are all your photos taken by photographers or yourself?
Tash: Most of my photos are taken by a select couple of Photographers but I would love to learn to also take my own photos and edit them.
OG: As a popular cosplayer/model, do you any forms of exercise to keep yourself tone and balance? Or is it all-natural? What do you do to keep yourself in shape?
Tash: I don’t exercise much, just a couple of days a week at the gym but I hate it.
OG: On those rare days, you get to relax and stay home, what’s it like for Tasha MacKenzie taking the day off? What sort of hobbies do you love to do?
Tash: On my relaxing days I love to go to wildlife parks or to the beach if its summer. I like to read sci-fi, horror and crime novels and spend time with my Cats.
OG: Like any music group?
Tash: I love music but don’t really have a specific type.
OG: Will you ever be known as the Hello Kitty Woman?
Tash: Ha ha Hello Kitty Woman! I think I was for a whole 10 years with my pink and white MX5 with Hello Kitty interior but this year I sold it and have a boring silver car and I have a lot less Hello Kitty going on now.
OG: What sort of projects is happening for you, next year? Are there new outfits you are developing right now?
Tash: Next year I already have a couple of conventions booked to guest at and hope to get booked for more. I have some new cosplays planed, some modeling stuff and hopefully a holiday lol!
OG: Would you consider to have a 2020 Tasha Cosplay UK Calendar?
Tash: I may consider a Calendar the year after.
OG: What sort of advice you can offer new and inspiring cosplayers/models out there?
Tash: Advice I would give to new Cosplayers is that when you start out, go into it having fun with your friends, dressing up as your favorite Character with no expectations as that’s what I did, anything else that happens as a result of it is just a bonus! Also when unsure of how to make things, check out other Cosplayers tutorials online and even reach out with a message as most are always going to answer and help if they can.
Now it’s time we ask Tasha Cosplay UK our, “So-Far OutRight Just-Geeky questions!”
