OG: Hello Daniela. Merry Christmas to you and yours. Thank you so much for doing this interview with us. Doing this interview is like opening our Christmas presents early.
OG: Please, for our readers, can you tell us all about yourself.
Dani: Hi! I am Daniela and I am Italian, I live in Milan with three very sweet rescue cat princesses, Aquarius: so, super creative, I guess! My eye color is very dark brown, my natural hair color is blondish but I have not seen it in years, I am currently dyed red because I love red curls; height 172cm (5’6’’ ft). I have always been an avid reader, and I usually read in English, to keep myself sharp, it is the only foreign language I can speak. I like many music genres but my favorite is the opera. I also used to play the piano, harp, and sing. Cooking is a no, no. Really, no.
OG: We have never met someone who loves Opera. That’s wonderful. What else do you love or interested in?
Dani: Of course I love cosplaying, and my other hobbies include videogames (especially RPG. Name an RPG saga, I probably love it, even more so if pretty vintage. MMORPG too, I played the Ragnarok Online beta!), traveling, tv/anime series, a lot of shopping, and playing with my cats of course. About my personality, it is a bit hard to say because I am an introvert but not introspective. Let’s say I am a chill person, a bit weird – but who isn’t? And I always try to stay positive and focus on the good side of things!
OG: Were you shy or outgoing sort of kid growing up? Were you ever bullied as a kid?
Dani: I was very shy and very bullied, even the primary school teacher was horrible with me… At least in high school, my classmates mostly ignored me, instead of making fun of me.
OG: What was the first costume you ever wore?
Dani: About my childhood carnival costumes, the first one I can remember was a pink Barbie princess-like dress, with white stars that gleamed in the dark, and I had the Barbie doll with the same dress, so pretty neat!
OG: What got you into cosplaying?
Dani: I actually got into cosplaying later in life than most people. After my law university degree, I took a sweet long trip to Tokyo. It wasn’t the first time, I often go there, I have relatives, but this time I took a 1 month language class, I liked it, I decided to study Japanese back in Italy too and my new classmates got me into cosplaying.
OG: What your first cosplay outfit? How did it make you feel? Did you learn anything from your fist cosplay appearance?
Dani: If you remember me saying that my only foreign language is English, yes? I speak very little Japanese. My first costume was Rin, the Vocaloid, a disaster, but I was with friends and I had fun, that is the important part!
OG: As a beautiful, young woman, does a woman-size matter (Height / Bra / Weight) when playing a character? What sort of planning when deciding what cosplay outfit you are going to do?
Dani: I am lucky enough to usually pick the characters that have my similar body type. It’s usually tall, busty, and evil-faced women. I will never like or play a Loli, that is impossible.
OG: What sort of characters attracted you to portray?
Dani: Sometimes I do like bare-chest male characters, like Illidan and Inosuke, but nothing to be done about it. If I really like a character that has a different body type – not too different and not a bare-chested man – I just cosplay him/her anyway, resemblance looks good but it is not necessary!
OG: Do you consider yourself a Geek or a Nerd or just simply obsessively creative? What sort of things that you do that’s considered to be Geeky?
Dani: I am not sure, I rarely use labels, but I guess I am? I Googled “geek” for a clear definition: It defines as someone who is intelligent but not fashionable or popular. I probably am intelligent. My IQ test results scored a 150. The tests are all about math and I love math! As for fashionable and popular: I probably am so in my little Nerd-World, but in the real world, for example at school, I was undoubtedly the least popular person.
OG: Do you create your own outfits or do you buy them? Where do you get your supplies/make-up, type of sewing machine do you use?
Dani: Yes I craft and sew 99% of my stuff! I mostly make armors and accessories. I have a nice pink Singer, and I buy my materials in a lot of different places. I can name two Italian supply shops for everything. They are La Gazzetta del cosplay and Ferramenta Chiostri.
OG: Are all the cosplay outfits you create reflections of your personality? Or, is your personality a reflection of the cosplay outfits you wear?
Dani: All of us have many sides to our personalities, there will always be something in common with a character, so I don’t think it is super important.
OG: Is there a cosplay outfit that you don’t like to wear but your fans love it?
Dani: There is no cosplay that I have done and really dislike to wear, but I had a similar problem: I like to keep making new cosplays, new characters, nice armors, but sometimes people want me to wear the same, easy, cosplay because of the resemblance… It happened a lot with Boa Hancock, it is flattering to be compared to such a beautiful character, but the costume is so simple!
OG: What’s your favorite cosplay outfit?
Dani: So, about my favorite outfit. As easy as that sounds, it changes every few months.
OG: What sort of makeup do you recommend when cosplaying?
Dani: I recommend high-quality makeup if possible, not just from cosmetic shops, but from theatrical shops too. Find accessories for wigs and other weird stuff that you wouldn’t wear every day.
OG: In your profession, is it necessary for those who have a demanding cosplay schedule to maintain an athletic figure?
Dani: I actually love working out, I hit the gym but somehow I often get distracted that keep me from going for long time periods, and I know I need it!
OG: Do you have any tattoos?
Dani: There are no tattoos, I prefer piercings. I used to have 8 piercings and 14 micro-dermal, currently 3 and 2.
OG: Are you easily recognized by your fans in public? Have you ever been mistaken for another cosplayer/model?
Dani: I am usually easily recognized and, strangely enough, I have never been mistaken for another cosplayer – as far as I know.
OG: What makes you, Dani-Foca stand out from the rest of the local cosplayers in your area?
Dani: Do I stand out? If I do, I guess it is because of my armor skills and my other two things!
OG: As a social media entertainer, is it always demanding to come up with new characters to portray for your fans? Do your fans request you for a particular character to dress up as?
Dani: I am indeed grateful to the kind, nice and supportive fans, but the thing about me is, I just do what I want. Can’t help it. If I can’t do what I want and when I want it, it gets mad. Maybe, I am a bit spoiled, sorry!
OG: How many have you done since you started cosplaying? Do you still find it enjoyable?
Dani: I gave up counting my cosplays years ago. They were once 70 pieces. I can guess they are at least 120 now, possibly 140-150 of them! I feel all of those things without cosplaying too, but cosplay is fun!
OG: How did you come up with the name, Dani-Foca Cosplay?
Dani: About the nickname, here is another old pointless story that I will cut short: I spent a winter in Sweden, a few years before cosplaying. Somehow, most of the clothing I took with me was white and fluffy, even a pair of white moon boots. This granted me the following nicknames: Knut, Sibert, and Foca (seal in Italian). Dani is just my name, Daniela.
OG: What sort of fans are attracted to your artwork?
Dani: The weird thing is on my public socials, most fans are male, about 20-30 years old. On my private profile and in real life, most are very cute and very young girls! Maybe they wish to become big and badass like me ~ I hope!!
OG: What surprises you the most about your fans?
Dani: What surprises me the most about my fans is that they really exist. It is funny, maybe. Well, it is actually surprising. Why does this person know stuff about me, and I don’t know about him/her? When people approach me at conventions because they follow me on the net, I’m the one that usually asks questions to try to know more about them too, it makes it feel better!
OG: Is there anything a fan can bring you that will make you cry for joy?
Dani: Any presents would make me cry for joy! But most of all if handmade, drawings for example.
OG: What types of characters are you most drawn to? Marvel, DC, Anime, Manga or something else?
Dani: I have cosplayed characters from almost any type of media, but the source of most cosplays is definitely videogames. Maybe because I played them since I can remember!
OG: Is there a character out there that best reflects your personality?
Dani: A character with a similar personality… Maybe Mt Lady from Boku no hero academia.
OG: Are you doing any upcoming conventions or photoshoots your fans can expect to see? What can fans and our readers expect to see in the near future from you?
OG: Would you consider yourself to be successful in your career?
Dani: I don’t know if I am successful in other people’s standards, but I am happy and I have fun, so I say I am!
It’s now time to ask Dani-Foca Cosplay our, “So-far Outright Just-Geeky questions”!
