New Music XIX Top EPs of 2019
I love the end of the year, as it is the time, I can discuss my favorite things of the year. I have already dropped my albums of the decade and Top albums of the year. Now it’s time for me to talk about some of my favorite EPs that dropped this year.
September Mourning – Volume III
September Mourning is a band I’ve been keeping an eye on after reading the graphic novel of the same name. I loved the story and wanted to check out the music that inspired it. This EP features two tracks that expand into the animated universe based on the graphic novel. Overdose and Hiding From Heaven are fantastic and the strongest tracks of the four on this EP.
The EP hasn’t had long to stick with me but with Hiding From Heaven’s early release kept me alert to the EP’s release.
Stitched Up Heart – Crooked Halo
I fell in love with Stitched Up Heart’s sound in 2015 but lost track of them soon after. I’m so glad I rediscovered them again in 2019 as their EP Crooked Halo is a pleasure to hear. Stitched Up Heart works with the theme of self-doubt, loneliness, and the fight to beat them. I love the hopeful, defiant lyrics within each track that give the listener strength, no matter how hard things get. Crooked Halo is the foundation for the album This Skin which dropped last month (29 November).
Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – The Is The Place EP
Noel Gallagher was busy this year releasing two EPs and working on a third. This is the Place was the second EP to drop and the one that got me hooked. What I love about this EP is the fact that Noel isn’t afraid to experiment with tone, sound, and pace. These three tracks work beautifully together while having their personalities. Evil Flower is my favorite track of the three, the guitars have me entranced from start to finish.
GhostGhost – Seven Inches of Satanic Panic
Seven Inches of Satanic Panic is a two-track EP that captures the fun and creativity of Ghost. While this is only two-track Kiss the Go-Goat and Mary on a Cross are pure fun to listen too.
Jetty Bones – –
I wasn’t aware of this EP until ARTV’s Top 50 Best Songs of 2019 video. I was intrigued by track one better, to the EP a listen and wow, this is an emotionally, personal set of tracks. I’m in awe at how Jetty turns these experiences in breath-taking songs.
Poppy – Choke
The Choke Ep was my first introduction to Poppy and this EP has me hooked. Just like Noel Gallagher High Flying Birds, I love this EP because it isn’t afraid to experiment. No song sounds alike and shouldn’t work together yet they do. Poppy doesn’t fit into a genre and I love that her EPs don’t either.
All American Rejects – Send Her to Heaven
Send Her to Heaven saw All American Rejects return with three tracks that demonstrate the brilliance that is AAR. The title track is the EP’s stand out track accompanied by a cinematic music video.
That’s it for my list of best EPs of 2019. I’d love to know what you thought of this list and who is on your list?
