Siljas Costume Interview
Hey there Outright-Geek-fans! Welcome readers for another cosplay interview. This week, we are honored to introduce a beautiful lady from Mexico. Known throughout the social media sites like Instagram and Twitter, her name is Silja’s Costumes. This woman has a wonderful soul and a great perspective on life. She absolutely loves doing cosplay, but don’t let that fool you as she’s a killer in the gaming world. Outright Geekery will always continue to bring new and exciting cosplayers from all across the world and we thank our lucky stars to land Silja’s Costumes for this exclusive interview with us. So without further delay, please show your love and support for this Mexican beauty. Silja’s Costume.
OG: Thank you so much for having Outright Geekery the opportunity to bring your interview to our fans out there. How are you?
Silja: I am well. Thank you for having me do this interview. Something tells me I am going to have a lot of fun with this.
OG: If all goes as planned, there’s a good chance you might be scarred for life. But hey, we all suffer for our artistry! Just make sure your cell phone has 911 on your speed-dial. If you are ready, we shall begin.
OG: Can you tell everyone out there about yourself?
Silja: I was born in Ciudad Obregón, México! But I moved to Arizona when I was young. I did elementary school there, then moved back to Mexico for high school and college. I had the opportunity to grow up in both cultures, which I feel has given me an edge to understanding social issues from a more “worldly” perspective.
OG: I’m told you’re a Big Gamer. What sort of games do you love to play?
Silja: I’m a big fan of RPGs and anything with a good story. Some of my favorites are MGS 3 and 5, FF7 and FF10, Bioshock Infinite, Tales of Symphonia, Transistor, Nier Automata, The Witch’s House, Heavy Rain, Mass Effect, The Witcher… just to name a few hahaha. I’ve loved videogames ever since I was a child. All of these games have touched me somehow during different eras of my life.
OG: When you are not cosplaying the latest creation from Silja’s Costumes that causes the internet to crash in Mexico, what do you love to relax and break away from the limelight?
Silja: I like to go to the gym, play videogames and take courses in stuff related either to my job or anything that feeds my general curiosity. I work in tech, so I take courses related to programming and data science. I’m also currently involved in a bible study class (oriented towards theology and symbolism, not necessarily for religious purposes lol) which is super interesting.
OG: What sort of kid were you growing up in Arizona? Was it tough growing up?
Silja: I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. I am the creative kid of the family, so I grew up doing a lot of artsy things. Painting, drawing, sewing, you name it. Since these hobbies are very immersive and not necessarily social, I enjoyed being alone a lot. I still do, actually.
OG: What sort of pets did you have as a child?
Silja: A lot! I had ferrets, cats, hamsters, fish, dogs… as you can probably tell I love animals. Hahaha.
OG: Dearn Lord. It was a mini Mexican zoo
OG: We are always told that Mexico has the best food out there. What’s your favorite we are willing to try?
Silja: Machaca and flour tortillas from Northern Mexico. You don’t need anything else.
OG: How did, Silja, known best by friends and family as Stephie, get started in cosplay?
Silja: Actually, I got started thanks to a Halloween party! I dressed up as a Bubblehead Nurse for a Halloween rock show/party and got a lot of compliments from my friends. After that, I was hooked and started looking up a lot of tutorials, cosplays, cosplayers, etc.
Silja: That was almost 10 years ago, now I’ve got more than 50 cosplays under my belt and a lot of fun experiences.
OG: People say when cosplaying for the first time, it will be hard at first, but it gets better with time and patience. Was that true for you?
Silja: In a way, yes. Practice makes perfect, that’s for sure. Wearing my first costume was definitely intimidating, and in a way it still is. When I wear a cosplay for the first time, I can’t help but think. Is it good, or am I just biased because I made it? Will people notice that it’s missing x, y or z?
OG: Was there ever a cosplay outfit you were not happy about but your fans absolutely love you in?
Silja: I don’t like my Morrigan, Star Guardian Ahri, Marvel’s Black Widow… I actually don’t like a lot of my cosplays! But I’ve been approached by people at conventions who tell me that they love those costumes of mine and it just comes off as a complete shock to me. On the inside I’m just like, “Damn I look so bad in that costume, someone actually liked it?”
OG: Lol. Come on Stephie if you were the worst cosplayer in the world, I’ll still interview you. Take mine and the fan’s comments, you are a really good cosplayer.
OG: What sort of characters do you love to portray?
Silja: Femme Fatales or strong characters for sure! I don’t do well with cute characters, I feel very uncomfortable wearing big dresses or pigtails.
OG: Do you suffer a lot for your artwork?
OG: Is that a yes?
Silja: Yes! Something hurts or is uncomfortable all of the time. You could name any costume I’ve done and I can tell you exactly what was painful about it, even the simplest of costumes have some element.
OG: What absolutely frustrates you when doing a photoshoot?
Silja: When we find out after the shoot something about the outfit wasn’t right, and it can’t be fixed via editing. 🙁 That is so frustrating for me. Or when I forget to use an accessory.
OG: Are all the cosplay outfits you created reflect your personality? Or is your personality a reflection of your cosplay outfits?
Silja: Actually, they’re quite the contrary to who I am in real life! Outside of cosplay, I’m really shy and don’t enjoy being the center of attention. I am at my happiest when I am unnoticed. And in cosplay that all changes. Haha. I like costumes that capture others’ attention. so I like to cosplay a lot of Femme Fatales because I admire their strength.
OG: What has been your most challenging cosplay outfit ever made?
Silja: Sindragosa! For starters, I cut 350-400 scales by hand! In general that costume was one hell of a challenge, and to date it’s one of my proudest armor builds. I had never done anything like that before. It was also my first time putting LEDs into a costume, so that was a feat of its own for me.
OG: That is an amazing armor cosplay, well done!
OG: What were some cosplayer names did you consider before you decided to use, Silja’s’s Costumes? How did you get that name?
Silja: I used to go by Spooky in the community, there are people who still call me that actually. It was the name of my DeviantArt account at the time. I got my current name from Silja Sofia, an ex-J-fashion blogger from back in the day.
OG: Do you do any workouts to help keep yourself toned and physically fit or is it just all-natural?
Silja: I mainly go to the gym, do intermittent fasting and walk a lot. I also avoid anything fried or large amounts of bread during weekdays, mainly because I don’t have the stomach for it anymore, haha. On the weekends, I eat whatever I want, though.
OG: This question for me is the burning question. Do you have any tattoos?
Silja: I have Geralt’s wolf medallion surrounded by lilacs and gooseberries tattooed on my back!
OG: Are there any television series or books you love to relax with?
Silja: I love The Witcher, both the videogames and the books! It’s a special franchise to me, and both characters have qualities that I would like to possess.
OG: Do your cosplay outfits empower you and you become the character itself?
Silja: I don’t feel like I become the character necessarily, but it definitely empowers me like nothing else. I’ve gotten looks from people when I talk about “my cosplaying side”, but it really does feel it’s somebody else.
Silja: In cosplay, I am not self-conscious and don’t have a problem wearing certain kinds of outfits. I am completely confident in my looks, something that I don’t experience when I’m normal me in a pair of jeans.
OG: On those miracle days you don’t have a photoshoot or doing any convention, how does Silja pamper herself?
Silja: I sleep a lot or indulge in other creative activities not related to cosplay. I also get a lot of peace from cleaning my room. I’m pretty boring on my days off, haha.
Time to ask Silja’s Costumes our, “So-Far OutRight Just-Geekery questions!”
OG: What is the #1 thing that all-female cosplay must-have in case of emergency?
Silja: Safety pins and super glue! I never go to a convention without either.
OG: Do you consider yourself a dark or complicated person?
Silja: Not really. I’m pretty direct with what I think or want, I don’t think I’m complicated as a person, Haha.
OG: If Siljas was very hungry, how many tacos could you eat in 1 hour?
Silja: 14 Tacos. Hahaha.
OG: Dear Lord. You should be on that show, Man vs. Food and change its name.
OG: What Disney character would you love being your Best Friend?
Silja: I’m not a Disney fan… but I guess Tiana. I admire people who work hard.
OG: This is a question many cosplayers hate being asked, “Can I get a hug?”
Silja: I totally don’t mind getting asked that believe it or not! I like hugs as long as you don’t try to squeeze the life out of me.
OG: I make no promises and thank you.
OG: Thank you so much, Stephie! That’s in the books and that’s a wrap. If I could ask one more question about where can our readers find more of Silja Costumes on the internet?
