This is everything you could want in a comic book! Three separate short stories…well, they seemed short because each one left me wanting more. If you read one book this month make it The Hellboy Winter Special. I can’t recall the last time I was this elated from reading a comic book that all I could think about was re-reading it. I’m guilty of reading many books twice. The first read is for the story, the second is to soak in all the hard work the art team put into the book, but this book is so much more. There’s even a teachable moment from each story held within these pages. Granted Hellboy is only in the first story, but don’t let that in no way dissuade you from reading this book. I can’t say enough good things about this book. Not to mention that even though the stories are all very different, but a similar tone runs through them all.
Mike Mignola, Chris Roberson, Scott Allie wrote these stories and, of course, as you can tell, I loved them all. Of course, the big draw is Hellboy’s creator whipping up a one of a kind ghost story for Hellboy and his friends. The second with backwoods lore come to life followed by a confessional tale of long ago which will shock you to your core. These three gentlemen are truly masters of their crafts.
Mark Laszlo, Leila Del Duca, Andrea Mutti were the artists on these three stories, and were assisted by talented colorists Dave Stewart, Michelle Madsen, Lee Loughridge. The look of all three stories was uniquely done in styles that all flowed perfectly together in a style reminiscent of Hellboy’s creator himself. These art teams were sheer perfection for this book, making this Hellboy Winter Special my favorite read of the year.
This was a perfect one-shot comic for many reasons, one of the biggest was this book has re-readability. I’ve read it five times as of today. It was fun, entertaining, intelligent, and intriguing tall tales. I haven’t scored a perfect book in such a long time and I read a lot! Just thinking about this issue puts me in a state of euphoria. A perfect one-shot comic.
