Dandy Don the Valiant Review: HIDDEN SOCIETY #1 – It’s Magically Delicious!
HIDDEN SOCIETY #1
Oh, hey, Mom. Yep, I’m getting ready to write another review. It’s called Hidden Society. Of course, you’ll be able to read it. Why wouldn’t you? No, the preview is not going to be hidden. It’s about a Hidden Society of wizards. How do I know about this Hidden Society? I read the issue. Well, no, I guess it won’t be hidden anymore if they’re printing books about it. Good point. Geesh. Sorry about that, OG peeps. Now, let’s get to this week’s Dandy Don the Valiant’s weekly review.
Dark Horse has another winner on their hands with Hidden Society #1. This wonderfully crafted story by Rafael Scavone pulls you in from the very first page and never lets go. The Hidden Society is about an ancient group of wizards pledged to protect the world and takes place in 1979. Now, whether or not it stays in that time frame remains to be seen. Of course, with wizards and magic, anything is possible. We are introduced to three different sets of characters before the wizard Ulloo brings them all together toward the end of the issue. The issue starts out by introducing us to Mercy, which is an interesting name choice since she really doesn’t show any mercy. Next up is Laura. She’s blind and is the master of a short, blue, winged, cigar smoking daemon named Orcus. Lastly, Jadoo is a magician that doesn’t seem to know that he has real magical powers. The characters by themselves are so intriguing that they could have their very own solo series, so bringing them all together opens up a vast array of possibilities that should keep this series magically running for a long time. And we haven’t even seen the villains yet! Or have we? We don’t know how these characters received their powers or why and how Laura is the master of a daemon, but I can’t wait to find out.
The writing of Rafael Scavone moves smoothly and has us looking forward to what’s coming up next for these characters, even in the short amount of time we had with each one. I loved the pace and the action of this first issue. Bringing these characters to life is the eye pleasing art of Rafael Albuquerque and the eye-popping colors of Marcelo Costa. If you love wizards and magic, adventure and action, and mystery and intrigue, this one needs to be added to your pull list. It’s magically delicious!
What are you doing hiding behind the curtains, Mom? What? No, that doesn’t make you part of a hidden society! Oh, boy.
