OG: Thank you Zeph for allowing your interview with us. We really appreciate this. How are you?
Zeph: Thank you Outright Geekery. I really appreciate you guys for having me do this interview. I am so excited and really curious about what sort of questions you will be asking me ><!
OG: Well, since our questions have been known to be controversial at times, we left that list of questions back at the office, so we replaced those questions with these at the last minute. Lucky Girl! So, if you are ready, Zeph, we will sound the trumpets to announce the start of our interview!
OG: Would you be so kind and tell our readers about yourself.
Zeph: Heyo! I’m Zeph Mikoto, also known as Zephegami! I’m Singaporean and I’ve been living here all my life, though many have told me I seem to have an American accent? To clarify things, though I’ll have an accent of sorts upon meeting me irl (I swear I’ve never even stepped foot into America, though I’d love to one day). Just like any other typical Asian, I have black/dark brown eyes and the same with my hair! I’m an Aquarius, and I speak basic Chinese as I’m a Chinese myself! I love instant noodles, and I hate tofu.
OG: What sort of Anime/Manga do you love reading when you have some time to yourself?
OG: What else should we know about Zeph Mikoto?
Zeph: When I’m not cosplaying, I’m in school, browsing social media, gaming or sleeping~ I LOVE animals! I frequently feed stray cats near my estate in my free time! My favorite music genre would be Soundcloud Rap! My favorite artists for example are, but not limited to 9TAILS, Familypet, Shinigami, and SoLonely.
OG: What sort of child were you growing up?
Zeph: Growing up I was an outgoing child at first, but I slowly caved with all that was surrounding me at that time, I slowly became more and more introverted, to an extreme. During class, I was completely mute by choice, with my teachers frantic and worried about this sudden development.
Zeph: Looking back now, I feel bad for them because I probably caused them a lot of trouble with this. The school wasn’t the problem, it was just that growing up, my household situation has never been too great. Around 5 to 8 years old, I’d frequently play ‘catching’ with my friends and peers (A.K.A., it’s just a game of tag). I stopped playing kid games once I turned 9, I didn’t have any hobbies other than Gaming QAQ
OG: Was cosplaying, early in your career, was a form of overcoming your shyness? Was there anyone, like a friend, who got you started?
Zeph: My best friend of 10 years (to this very day), was a fairly introverted person. Growing up, I sort of assumed the role of the one to protect her. She was the one who boldly said she wanted to try cosplaying out of nowhere, which was very out of character for her. I immediately opted to join her, and that was how the two of us got into Cosplay!
OG: What was your first ever cosplay outfit? Did your first appearance go well?
Zeph: My first cosplay was Chocola from Nekopara (love that game btw), and oh god it was a horrible mess. I bought it secondhand from someone, but I did a horrible job looking back.
OG: Was there a cosplay outfit that you hated but your fans love you in?
Zeph: Personally, I really hated my cosplay of Ichigo from DITF, but a lot of my friends and supporters loved it >< !
OG: What sort of cosplay characters do you find yourself becoming attracted to?
Zeph: I love portraying characters that I can heavily relate to, or whom I love.
OG: Is cosplaying in Singapore very popular. Are local people supportive cosplayers?
Zeph: While Singapore has a small community of cosplayers, the support and love are overwhelming and I’m forever grateful to my friends and supporters for giving me the motivation to continue on when my future seems bleak. ♡
OG: We often ask this question to cosplayers. Does the shape and body size of a cosplayer determine what sort of outfit he/she should wear?
Zeph: Sure, body size will always matter to the audience because accuracy is key while cosplaying. However, as cosplayers, all my friends and I agree that it really does not matter to us. I just love seeing people cosplay even if their body size may not be ‘accurate’, because that’s when I get to see them happiest as the character that they love!
OG: Lewd cosplaying is becoming more mainstream for cosplayers. What’s your opinion of cosplayers doing Lewds? Should cosplayers do Lewds cosplay for artistry or for money?
Zeph: Looking away from the ‘woman’ stigma, I think that anyone who does lewd content does it for themselves mostly, though of course, it’ll earn them more than those who don’t.
Zeph: There will always be consumers more interested in the lewd community than cosplay, and that’s perfectly normal! Rather than criticizing and mocking those who do lewd/lewd cosplays, I think they’re amazing for being able to display their body with such confidence. They worked hard for it, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with showing off what you worked for.
OG: Our gut feeling you are a hard-core gamer. What sort of games do you play?
Zeph: I’ve been actively playing League for 8 years now, other games I actively play are PSO2, Paladins, Shadowverse and Sims! I also play the arcade game “Maimai” quite often. I play the PS4, PC, DS, and 3DS! I would definitely go back to Maplestory if my friends want to party up for it, it’s a childhood favorite of mine. (´∩｡• ᵕ •｡∩`) ♡
OG: What’s your gamer name?
Zeph: I go by the name ‘Zephior’ mostly! Growing up, my role models for League were Rekkles, Hauntzer and now Emiru ♡
OG: Here’s a question many cosplayers often is split down the middle on. Are your cosplay outfit wear reflections of your personality or your personality a reflection of your cosplay outfit wear?
Zeph: I’d like to think that my style is always incorporated into my cosplays, to which when people see my cosplays, they can say ‘That’s Zephegami!’ (◍•ᴗ•◍)♡ ✧*。I’ve had many expensive cosplays, to which I have to open up Paypal for tips/support as cosplaying takes a huge toll on my daily expenses.. I have a cosplay where I sewed, and for some, I do sew minor defects here and there but I wouldn’t say I’m great at it :’)…
OG: I’m told you are very critical of your cosplay outfits. It goes to show how professional you are with your artistry which is amazing! Do you find yourself always improving on your last outfit?
Zeph: I started cosplay 1-2 years ago, looking back and to the present, I’m fairly proud but never satisfied enough with my current skills! I feel like I can always do much better ><
OG: We’ve been meaning to ask is how did you get your cosplayer name, Zeph Mikoto?
Zeph: My cosplay name ‘Zeph Mikoto’ derives from ‘Zephior’, my user game name before I started cosplaying and ‘Mikoto’ comes from 2 characters that I love and relate to, Mikoto Suoh and MEIKA Mikoto!
OG: Was there any time a photoshoot did not go well for whatever reason?
Zeph: I do have some photoshoots I wasn’t comfortable with, but I end up telling the photographer at the end of the shoot or the next day about pictures I’d prefer to not be posted.
OG: What sort of photos do you love doing while in cosplay outfits?
Zeph: I love experimenting with angles, and personally I love closeup photos most!
OG: Not always the life of cosplayers is all bells and whistles, are there any days that are frustrating being a cosplayer?
Zeph: What truly frustrates me are the messages or comments I get, with people thinking that just because I do cosplay or I put myself out there, that they’re entitled to seemingly act like my lover or that they claim to want to get to know me better, pushing for my contact number. Of course, I’ve had my fair share of other situations, but the messages I get are what infuriates me most! <(｀^´)>
OG: Does your artistry go into body piercing or tattoos? If so, what are they? What do you feel about props with your cosplay?
Zeph: I pierced my ears, but that’s about it! I’m okay with having tattoos, but I haven’t really found one I’d like on my body yet. Most of my cosplays have props and they’re a huge pain to transport/travel around with.. TT
OG: Have you been able to profit from your work, or are you a financially struggling artist for your artistry?
Zeph: Luckily, I have a few supporters who support me and my cosplay work! About 80% comes from my own means though QAQ. Still, I’m incredibly grateful that I’m even offered the support I am at the moment! I wouldn’t say I’m able to make a career from cosplaying or have a salary, it’s still just a hobby for now 🙂
OG: Most cosplayers like to keep themselves physically fit. Does that apply to you?
Zeph: I exercise every few days and control what I eat on a daily basis to keep myself in shape, but having chubby genetics and large bones, I’m not able to get the body I want >< (which is okay, I love my body anyways c:).
OG: Whenever you are in public, what do people notice about you when meeting you for the first time?
Zeph: When people meet me for the first time, the first thing they compliment on is my accent, and then my assets. Frankly speaking, while I do blush from hearing them compliment my foreign accent, I’d like to not know or hear about what they have to say about the latter. It’s not exactly praising either, because I didn’t quite work for it unlike other parts of my body.
OG: Whatever happened meeting your favorite cosplayer and just compliment their artwork or eye color. These are kind of people who never had a mother and were dropped as a baby.
OG: When not working, after doing photoshoots, or cosplaying after a convention run, what sort of clothing does Zeph Mikoto relaxes in?
Zeph: I wear oversized shirts that I get as gifts from conventions as well as comfy shorts on days where I stay at home and catch up with errands that need my attention! The comfiest thing ever, I SWEAR. ( ◜◒◝ )♡
OG: Do you take some time at gaming to release any stress?
Zeph: I love gaming or editing my backlog to relax when I have free time.
OG: How do your die-hard fans treat you?
Zeph: My fans treat me amazingly, I get gifts here and there and I don’t think I can ever do enough for them. I almost feel like I don’t deserve this amount of support, and I remember every supporter, those that comment, like or support me frequently equally. Most of them have been fairly respectful, with a handful of them wanting more from me that I’m not willing to give.
OG: Do you find yourself having more men or more women as fans of Zeph Mikoto?
Zeph: While cosplaying, since I cosplay mostly females, I’m bound to have more men as my fans compared to women. I love them all equally, no matter their gender ♡. I do reply to sincere fans as fast as I can when they message me, but sometimes it’s hard to reply to them all as I live in Singapore, where the school is a huge factor in daily life.
OG: I know you mentioned how rigorous the Singapore school system is. How tough was it? Is it easier now?
Zeph: I was in a school where I spent 12 hours every day in school for 4 years! Now, I’m in a college where I spend less time thankfully, so I get to reply to more fans >w<
OG: What has been your family’s reaction to your cosplaying?
Zeph: My dad is actually fairly against it, while my mom tries to show her support from time to time! She’s fairly proud of me for breaking out of my introverted shell for this newfound hobby ♡´･ᴗ･`♡
OG: Are there any future career plans or projects you have in store for fans?
Zeph: I’ll be diving into more lewd content in 2021! One of my wishes/goals in life is to have a body pillow of myself in cosplay, so, you can look forward to that in the next few years! ୧༼✿ ͡◕ д
◕͡ ༽୨ .
OG: OH, MY GOODNESS!
Zeph: I currently do not have Ko-Fi or a Patreon, so donations can be made through my Paypal! I also have some merchandise that I post about frequently on my Instagram. While it’s unclear if I’ll start a Patreon next year, I’ll have a Ko-Fi next year for sure so please check it out if you’re keen on supporting my work and what I do! (´꒳`∗)
OG: What sort of advice would you offer to new photographers and inspiring cosplayer
Zeph: I can’t speak much for photographers, but I would definitely love to give advice to the newer cosplayers (and maybe models?)! While cosplaying, please don’t feel pressured into having to do lewd content just to gain support, or feeling forced to fit into the body accuracy of certain characters! Loving yourself and your body is so important going along your cosplay journey, so please never forget that! Wishing all of you immense luck and success! ♡＾▽＾♡
Time we ask Zeph Mikoto our, “So-Far OutRight Just-Geeky questions!”
OG: How well do Singapore Airlines treat their guests when flying on their airline?
Zeph: I personally don’t travel too much, but I’d say fairly well! Singapore Airlines is my favorite airline so far~ ( ๑ ❛ ڡ ❛ ๑ )❤
OG: What are the colors of Singapore’s flag representing?
Zeph: According to Wikipedia….. “Red symbolizes universal brotherhood and equality of man; white stands for pervading and everlasting purity and virtue.” (Don’t quote me on this! I don’t remember learning about this!) (,,꒪꒫꒪,,)
OG: Can people smuggle gum to your country?
Zeph: I’m not saying anything about this but.. (￣ω￣)
OG: Are the people in Singapore very relaxed?
Zeph: I would say anything but, actually. A lot of us are quite stressed, especially those in Secondary School. Having left Secondary School just recently, I would say that it really felt hellish going through it. Upon promotion to a higher institution, I’m so much more relaxed and happier. Working adults and Secondary School students alike, I have a lot of respect for them because I’ve seen the stress that comes about with their daily life.
OG: What sort of Superpower would Zeph Mikoto use to make the world a better place?
Zeph: I’d want kinesis because it’s so flexible. Should an attack take place or be it authorities removing strays, I can use my power to help! (✿´ ꒳ ` )
OG: If Zeph Mikoto was given a reality show for the world to watch, what would she keep a secret from everyone?
Zeph: That’s a secret! (๑・ω-)～♥”
OG: Speaking of secrets, what special talent or ability Zeph Mikoto can do but that no one knows about?
Zeph: I don’t think I have any, but most people are surprised by how I can wiggle my ears and eat a complete meal (with a drink) as quickly as 2 minutes? (´꒳`)
OG: I’m going to order you a pot-full of BBQ chicken wings, Ice tea, and time you!
OG: How can someone who doesn’t know anything about Zeph Mikoto, know if she is mad?
Zeph: I don’t usually glare, so if I glare while not saying much, that’s when they’ll know! Though usually, I’ll just confront said person~
OG: Can you name a weapon you have held in your hands and used it?
Zeph: I’ve held a cat in my hands and patted it, and upon patting, it bit me. Does that count? ヘ(>_<ヘ)
OG: Is there a particular country you would be interested to visit and possibly do a photoshoot?
Zeph: Definitely Japan or Korea! I love the environment there, so I’d be grateful if I could shoot in those countries one day ♥
OG: What Is Your Biggest Pet Peeve?
Zeph: Smalltalk! I hate small talk or when people chew loudly (ꐦ ಠ皿ಠ )
OG: What is absolutely illegal to do in Singapore?
Zeph: I dunno, probably having a weapon in possession?
OG: What movie will Zeph Mikoto cry every time she sees it?
Zeph: I actually get fairly emotional when watching movies, so I’ve cried in 90% of the movies I’ve watched.. (੭ ˃̣̣̥ ㅂ˂̣̣̥)੭ु
OG: Have you ever been mistaken for another cosplayer?
Zeph: A few times, but it’s not a big deal to me! We’re all bound to look different for each cosplay, so I understand completely if people mistake me for someone else! ( ◞･౪･)
OG: This question seems to have various answers with cosplayers. Here is the question: Can I get a hug?
Zeph: Sure! I give hugs to anyone who asks nicely~ (and as long as I’m comfortable!) ⊂((・▽・))⊃
OG: This interview is in, Tha Books! Thank you, Zeph for being such a wonderful cosplayer and endearing soul. If we could ask you one more question? Where can our fans find more of Zeph Mikoto and those amazing cosplay pictures?
